Using subs as speaker stands ? As stated, good stands are going to work better than stacking on the subs. But if you want to try it, look into a product called Microsorb, sold by percyaudio.com. It is a sticky acrylic damping sheet that will not only hold the speakers very effe...
Antenna recomendation Agree with the above. I've compared my ST-2 to the generic twin-lead that comes with every tuner, and in many cases the twin-lead is better due to having some directionality. Like Sam says, go buy a cheap yagi from ratshack and try it.
Tube pre to use with Bryston 4BST Not trying to discourage you from tube preamps; I used to run an ARC into my 4Bst and it worked great. BUT your source is a far bigger problem and far more in need of replacement than the BP25. Do yourself a big favor and buy a more musical cd pla...
Outdoor antenna setup Sean, the 60 mile thing is based on typical flatland topography and a typical transmitter and receiver height. Obviously, if you have a 1000' antenna at each end, you're going to do better. But the point is that FM signals are line-of-sight only, ...
Outdoor antenna setup Agree with most of the above, FM reception becomes extremely difficult past 60 miles. If there are ANY large mountains in the vicinity, it is worth a try to aim your Yagi at the mountain and see if you can get the bounce signal. This will often be...
Have I finally lost my mind? I haven't made any measurements, but I'd be willing to bet that there is a lot more imbalance due to off-center holes than you will get from a little ink. Just a guess...
Dunlavy vs JM Lab Sean, that story about the cables cracks me up. Nothing like a little accuracy upstream to show a speaker's true colors, eh? I tried for a long time to build systems around Focal drivers and just never could get them to sound "natural", a quality ...
Anyone else like to Listen in the Dark? From a neurological point of view, there is a very good reason for this: the brain's visual centers have many orders of magnitude more cortex dedicated to them than do the aural centers. Closing your eyes (or listening in the dark) shuts down an e...
UPS ??? Do they ever pay a claim??? Bamafan, NEVER ship just in the factory packaging, always put that inside another NEW box with at least 2" of insulation all around. The reason I say this: I once shipped a CAL cd player in its original factory packaging (which was very good, btw)...
BMG CD's ARE worse Many years ago I had two copies of Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms that were vastly different in sound quality, so much so that anyone could tell instantly, even on a poor quality system. I believe one of them was a BMG. So I agree too, something s...
REL subs--Strata III or Storm III ?? Each step up the REL line is a pretty big jump in quality, so go with the biggest one you can get away with. I had a Storm III and changed to a Stadium III - BIG improvement! I have heard that the Stentor is better still, but haven't heard it in m...
Suggestion for Amp to 2 ohm loads? Most of the older Krell class A amps worked fine into this load, and are pretty cheap these days. Not the last word in sonic refinement, but pretty bulletproof.
voltage between ground and newtral... There is no way to change this, it is a function of the power company and there's nothing you can do about it. But neither should it be a problem, if your components are designed correctly. As you have noted, some power conditioners will eliminate...
Who has solved the HVAC air noise problem? Several things:1. not all blowers are created equal; shop around.2. keep the blower as far from the room as possible.3. make the ducts as big as possible; the drop in noise from doubling the size of the duct will astonish you and is probably more ...
MOST tubelike solid state amp As said by many posts above, try the SS amps made by the best tube people: ARC, BAT, CJ, and Lamm. They are all excellent. Also look into Pass Aleph and X series, Ayre, and Rowland, all excellent as well. Forget about Levinson, it's just not going... |
