If you could only keep 5 record albums, what would they be?
If, indeed, I was put in the position of only being allowed to keep 5 record albums, I would think that most all of the contributors collections would be adequately satisfying.  I suspect that the limitation of recorded music would encourage me to...
Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
Man, the hipsters are into pro audio.  They'll go direct from their phones to a pair of active studio monitors.  The extra cool kids have a two channel audio interface or a small mixing board so they can plug in their turntables, CD players, plays...
Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
Somebody mentioned "Exile on Main Street".  My remastered digital copy (2010, Universal Republic records B0014130-02) sounds harsh on my system, my old record from '72 sounds perfect.  Who knows?

The way I see it, a record album was originally a cardboard book with paper sleeves and a bunch of 78s in it.  A "record" was just a single 78.  So as far as I'm concerned, an album can be a boxed set!
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Slaw:  Technics SL1200 GR, stock arm.  I can give you a full report, but the cheap Merlot got the better of me tonight.
I like my system flat, no tone controls, no eq..........what is your preference, and why.
Back in the day I couldn’t wait to bypass the tone controls on my Dynaco Pas 3x. All the cool people did it (yes, it did sound better on most records).I use equalization extensively with my pro audio gear (API 5500 for analog, but there are excell...

Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
I have already stated my opinion on vinyl vs. digital, in short, they both have their place.  Reading through this thread, however, I gather some people either have a strange emotional connection with their media or are using this forum to exercis...
Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
There are many variables but records will sound different from digital. I don't see the differences between media as being necessarily better or worse, but you can scale the differences between components and systems within a media playback system...
Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
You just need to mess with it more.  There will come a time when playing records make sense.  There is a certain "stillness" to vinyl, and I find it's easier to engage with the music.Because of the critical initial conditions of the transducers an...
One speaker observation from the New York Hifi show.
Sit in your listening position and move the speakers around until it sounds good.  If moving them around is not an option, just put them where they have to go and deal with it.Think about your room before you buy speakers.  If you are really into ...
Thinking about a new, lower end CD Player
I have a Cambridge 640 that I use digital out to whatever DAC I'm using at the moment.  When the drawer stopped working, I took it out of the system and used an inexpensive Samsung Blu-Ray player (fortunately, I had the foresight to get one with a...
Flaws in this chain?
I use an Apple TV in my system and I can't tell the difference between it and an Airport Express, which does not resample my signal.  When I plug in my laptop directly to the DAC it still sounds the same to me.  Of course, I am limited to 16/44.1,...
Vinyl System Upgrade Path Recommendations
I built a dyna-kit ST-70 back in the 70’s. I still have it, but retired it long ago and moved on. Don’t know much about the Eico, but I’m guessing it is a somewhat earlier vintage. If you have kept it up (tubes, sockets caps, driver board, etc.) i...
