Who services older equipment?
An addition to my original post: I live in Tallahassee, Fl.The tuner (Marantz model 112) works good. I recently replaced the panel backlighting using four fuse type lamps. There are four indicator lamps for various switches. Two do not work, and I...
Audio Refinement with Magnepan MMG
I'm not quite sure from your description whether the Audio Refinement amp is SS or tube, since I am not familiar with it. However, I do own MMGs and drive them with a pair of Quicksilver kt88 tube amps rated at 60 watts per channel. They drive the...
Better magazine, Stereophile or Absolute Sound
I've read and subscribed to both at one time or another for more than 30 yrs(as well as most other hi-fi mags). I don't get much enjoyment from AS anymore, but Stereophile is stillfairly entertaining and much easier to read. However, I don't buy i...
Cable Length for Center Channel?
At audio frequencies, length (within reason) shouldn't matter. Now, the RCL network of a cable could have some small effect, but I doubt it will be audible. So just wire it up and don't worry about it.Jim

What would you do?
I'm not sure there is a problem! My experience is as a buyeronly. First, I pay by MO all the time, so nothing wrong with requiring a MO. Secondly, nobody is ging to ship beforereceiving payment. And finally, cod does cost extra. So make sure the s...
Cd players with volume control.
Beware that some, if not most, of the volume controls work in the digital domain. I believe this means that for every 6 db of attenuation you are losing 1 bit in resolution. Also, remember that each time you power on the cd player it will be set t...
What turntable for 1000
I can heartily recommend a VPI MK 17 JR. You can get this TT with a Rega or Audioquest arm and a good cartridge for $1000 or less, new. My own experience with this TT is very positive. I've had one for 10 yrs with not one problem. It even has the ...
Dust Covers
If you're talking about removing swirls and such, I can't help you. But I've been cleaning my VPI dust cover for tenyears and it looks as good today as when I bought it.What do I use? Glass Plus and paper towels!
Lower gain in left channel.
I would suggest narrowing the problem to a particular piece of hardware. Maybe you've already done so, but I would swap the cables between preamp and power amp, and swap speaker cables or speakers whichever is easiest. I had a similar problem with...
Wall panels to control brightness
Take a look at Sonex. They are 2 x 4 foot sections. They do a wonderful job. You can order a set of 6. Don't remember the price, but it is reasonable. Stick with the charcoal. You can get them through Audio Advisor.Jim
Why SACD,DVD-A are already DEAD
I hate to admit it, but SACD and probably DVD-A are not going to make it. That's a shame, really. I have a DVD-A player with an Outlaw outboard base management box and it works great in multi-channel mode. I would not bother with 2-channel DVD-A. ...
Running 4 ohm speaks on bridged amp...ok?
It's true, bridging does not change the speaker's impedancebut since each channel of a bridged amp drives half the wave form, it sees half the speaker's impedance. Most manufacturers of 4 ohm (or less) speakers advise against bridging. However, so...
Recommended DVD-A Discs?
I've found the quality on most disks varies from song to song, but here goes:Eagles Hotel California is very good, but I think the dts dvd of Hell Freezes Over is better.Aaron Neville Devotion is very good. Morning Has Brokenis one of the very bes...
Consumer SACD/DVD-A worth it?
I went the DVD-A route about a year ago, anticipating it would be the next big thing. It hasn't quite worked out that way, but I'm still very enthusiastic about the multi-channel capabilities. I won't get into 24/96 since I doubt the resolving pow...
