Your sub experience: Easy or hard?
I've been using my Hsu sub for more than 20 years. I stick it in the corner and don' t turn it up too loud. It ain't that hard.
Albums you do not get...a plea for help and understanding
I like jazz, but I can do without Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman. I bought a couple of Albums by Radiohead and I just don't get there music. Sometimes it almost sounds like I'm playing at the wrong speed.
DVD-A questions: LFE channel; DTS/DVD-A confusion
Yes, DVD-A is confusing. To be a true DVD-A disc, it should have a high resolution soundtrack using a 24 bit word length with sampling frequencies from 48khz to 192khz. They can be any number of channels, from 2 to 6. The true DVD-A layer is only ...
Antique Sound Lab HB1 headphone amp: comments?
I just purchased one of these from Audio Advisor for $225 with free shipping. I've had it about a week and it does just what it is supposed to. I don't have a tape out on my preamp, so I use the 2nd line-level output. This thing is tiny, but it's ...
Who Was Your Favorite One Hit Wonder
A true one hit wonder, 'Tighter and Tighter' by Alive N Kicking. Maybe not a one hit wonder, 'Shine' by Collective Soul.
what is dynamic headroom?
Dynamic hr is really just the ability of an amp to put out more power than its rating would suggest. For example, an amp rated at 100w per channel that can put out 200w for short durations ( a few milliseconds) has 3db of headroom. There are vario...
Analog recording from DVD recorder?
I'm no expert on DVD recorders, having never used one, but you can record from any source so long as it is analog. Of course, it will only be in stereo since there are no multi-channel recorders that I have ever heard of.Jim
5.1 bass management
That's about it. Although I remember a review in Sound & Vision magazine on one made,I believe, by M&K.
Favorite Movie Soundtrack
Given the time I might think of others, but three favorites: Manhunter, The Mission, The Thin Red Line.Jim
What's a phonostage, and do I need one?
You have a very nice classic receiver and I wouldn't upgrade just because somebody says so. Of course you can do better, but give it a try before spending money needlessly. One point about relative levels between phono and line level inputs: Most l...
How to demag. tape heads with bulk eraser
Personally, I would not use a bulk eraser to demagetize tape heads because of it's very strong magnetic field. However, it might work, I've just never tried it. The procedure to demagnetize is simple. Just start from about a couple of feet away an...
Demagnetizing my cartridge? how? how much$$$?
I've used moving coils without ever demagnetizing with no ill effects. You should NOT demagnetize a moving magnet cartridge. I'll leave the reasons why to the experts.Jim
Guilty Pleasures: Throwaway Pop
Just wanted to add a few artists from another genre, New Age and Electronic: Enya, Kitaro, Tangerine Dream I'm sure many of you have heard, but what about Mark Dwane, Michael Stearns, Patrick O'hearn, Constance Denby, etc.Two things I've noticed a...
Guilty Pleasures: Throwaway Pop
I admit it, I have many lps from the 60s, 70s and 80s that I still like to listen to: Journey, REO, Styx, Human League, The Babys, etc.So shoot me!Jim
What music have you been buying lately?
Blkadr, I'm not sure the CCR reissues live up to the hype (what does), but the sound is excellent. Of course, the music speaks for itself. But I must admit I've heard few, if any, 180g/200g reissues that I didn't like. However, for another level o...
