Standmount speakers. I have $5000.
The vast majority of musical content lies in the midrange.Yes it might be optimal to have low bass but most music does not have much low bass and the best way of achieving that if you want it is with a pair of active subwoofers [probably with DSP].
Standmount speakers. I have $5000.
The Dynaudio Confidence C1s are the best stand mounts I have heard.-and by a big margin. You can get a second hand pair of them for $5000.The next tier down Contours are decent but nowhere near the C1s.
High value, giant killer speakers?
The JBL Studio 590s were amazing speakers for the money.A highly engineered and sophisticated horn design which sounded superb with low powered amplifiers. JBL seems to have stopped making them however.
What speakers use a "minimal" crossover?
Many of these minimal crossover speakers use mid/woofers with an abnormally high voice coil inductance .The SEAS A26 are an example of that.So to claim there is no crossover on the mid/woofer is arguably misleading. It is just that a first order cr...
What are some of the most underrated and overrated loudspeakers you’ve auditioned?
Many comments here are based on the faulty assumption that all speakers will sound good or bad regardless of what amplifier you are using .When in reality speaker/amplifier synergy is critical. What might sound poor on one amplifier could sound exc...
Bookshelf Bake Off
The Osborn Eos Reference is great bookshelf speaker and fantastic value.Maybe not as good as a Dynaudio Confidence C1 Platinum [which I think is the best you can buy] but close and about a third the price. The tweeters in both are absolutely top sh...
Imported audio are you getting the same level of performance vs domestic priced equip?
if you can't find a good Australian made speaker you can't be looking very hard-Krix,Osborn ,VAF,Legend,Adelaide Speakers,Duntech,Lenehan ,Hulgich ,SGR all make excellent speakers.
The best looking speakers
Gale 401a [the chrome end ones]. 45 years on they are still the most beautiful speaker made and they sound better than 99% of modern speakers too.Next to that Sonus Faber Amati Futura are gorgeous sculptural things that also sound superb.
Suggestions for low powered tube amps for Zu Omens
The Bakoon 7511Mk3 is a wonderful sounding thing and great with high efficiency speakers. The Elekit amps are also very good but the Bakoons are really special.Only 15 watts but they have a purity to them that I have only heard from really good SET...
Pin point imaging isn't for everyone
Well in some acoustic environments you can certainly hear precisely where each instrument and voice is located .I agree that is not what you hear in large concert halls but in smaller performance spaces playing smaller scale music you certainly ca...
Recommendations for Vintage Speakers
The Gales do sound big but the low end is very tight and textured and most especially rhythmical rather than hefty.Hefty for their size  I suppose because they have a two 8 inch woofers in a compact box.I have always wondered if part of the reason...
Recommendations for Vintage Speakers
I have owned most of the speakers suggested and some of them are very good but I think on balance Gale 401 are the best of the lot. Most of all they do not sound like boxes, are very refined yet also very dynamic and are great on a wide range of mus...
Recommendations for Vintage Speakers
There are some very good vintage speakers  and several of them have been suggested but the suggested JBL Century L100 is not one of them.Probably the worst sounding speaker I have owned. No crossover on the woofer so you get a heap of cone break up...
Magico S5 Speaker - owners - heard them!
Magico S5s sound really good with Supratek preamps. There is some sort of magic synergy between the two products.
Supratek or Don Sachs - which way to go?
Good to hear Mark. Many times I have heard  a decent system transformed into a really great system simply by adding a Supratek preamp. Not in every case due to the x factor which is preamp/power amp synergy but much more often than not .
