used SET amp under $1500 suggestion
not trying to talk him out of a SET amp, just not sure that will solve the problem of too much gain in the system. would be a shame to put $1500 into an amp and STILL have too much gain from the source allowing you a tiny range on the volume contr...
used SET amp under $1500 suggestion
are you sure the problem lies with your pre or amp and not your source??? maybe your source has an unusually high output voltage??I had an issue with the output voltage of a source using a passive pre with a SET amp. the volume control could only ...

My speakers - weak link - proposals ?
looks like a well-balanced system on paper at least ... Paradigm makes nice speakers that sometimes get an undeserved "bad rap" because they are mass marketed as opposed to only sold at specialty shops.
Pre/Amp/Int for Vandersteen 2ce Sig II for +/-$3k
Audible Illusions M3A preamp plus Music Reference RM10mk I or II ... awesome with Vandersteens
Solid state amp for Totem Model 1`s
used a Rowland Model 1 with the Totem 1's many years ago ... great match! I believe Sim Audio used to voice some of their amps with Totems so these should be excellent as well.
Volume problem with Passive Preamp
I had the same issue with a passive unit I have ... I had it modified with a step DOWN transformer and it worked fantastic! definitely not an inexpensive way to go

placement of the Alons may be part of the problem but you are apparently limited in placement options. try moving the speakers even a little bit and see if your impression changes.
Best speakers For ARC VT100MKII
a pair of Proac 2.5 or 3.5 or 3.8 would be great with the VT100 ... what did you find lacking the the Vandy Sig 3's though?? might help to know in order to get recommendations
Mid-Fi Integrated Amps?
personally I agree with mMike84 ... go used! if you are worried about warranty etc, their are some companies that offer 10yr or longer (20 in the case of Bryston) transferable warranty.A Bryston B60SST would be a nice match with your speakers and ...
What to do in my situation...
Alon speakers have excellent bass ... what type of music are you listening to or are you looking for "home theater bass"?? It is also possible your room is too big for the speakers.
Inexpensive CD Player
I have honestly had worse luck on the reliability side with new, inexpensive CD players than with older, "higher-end" models ... YMMV. The Naim CD3 which I owned was extremely robust, even surviving having a glass globe filled with over a gallon o...
Inexpensive CD Player
a used Rega Planet or a Naim CD3 ... both are older models that just sound great! one or both may be in your price class
Quality In Wall Speakers
I would consider "on wall speakers" ... much easier to mount and change if you re-configure your room or do not like the sound. There were some Duntech models available here a couple days ago. Also consider models from Krell, Sonus Faber, etc
