Help! Subwoofer Newbie Problems!
I've had several subs and have quite a bit of experience with integrating them.  There is definitely something to the claim that having multiple sets of interconnects can mess up the sound.  It isn't always a problem but I've found that my benchma...
More Bad News AT Thiel
That is quite a review.  They're banking on females to buy it because the ceo is a female and apparently the mechanical engineer who designs the products is too.  I love this quote.  How many women are there who want to spend an extra $500 over th...
More Bad News AT Thiel
Does anyone know who is running the show?  I'm really curious.  Is it all just The Thomas Group LLC?  Is this one idiot the whole story?  It's hard to believe it's just this one cretin who bought the company a few years ago and is the one behind t...

Jim Thiel was also only 61 when he died.  He had most likely been sick for a few years.  He probably thought he had 10-15 years left when he was diagnosed.  Who knows what his plans were.  It's one of those things that just sucks and there's not t...
More Bad News AT Thiel
Thiel traditionally shuts down for a few weeks this time of year so it's possible they are planning to open back up but it does seem that they let their chief engineer go.  He was only with the company since 2014, though, so he's not really a Thie...

As a Thiel and ATC owner I too am ;hoping this doesn't happen at ATC.  I do think that it has become clear that the people who bought Thiel were very inept.  They didn't continue making real Thiel products and run the company similar to how Jim di...
Can a Quality Full Range Speaker be the Limiting Component in a system?
A better question would be can anything but the speakers be the limiting component in a system made up of quality components.  I've been refraining from commenting on this thread because I have a hard time believing it's a sincere question.  Why w...
Speed
Room interaction can depend on whether or not there are ports and where they are.  Port location can definitely make a difference in how a speaker interacts with the room.  This can give better bass support but can also excite room resonances more...
$20K to spend on speakers…. . wait! There’s a catch!
I don't see myself ever spending 20k on speakers but I do think there's a time to buy blind.  It's when you are confident that you're getting something more for your money than you'll get otherwise.  I bought a pair of ATC 110 ASLs a few years bac...
Am I an Audiophile, a music lover-or both?
It's fine to like certain sounds for their own sake.  It's why there are orchestras, bands, vocalists, etc.  You could do it all on a computer with a crude synthesizer but it wouldn't be nearly as satisfying.  There's a reason some guitars, pianos...
Please suggest bookshelf with best bass response under $4000 pr.
Theoretically a smaller driver with greater excursion can go deep but at the expense of sensitivity.  Ports or transmission line can extend frequency response down as well.  There's no substitute for a big driver in a big box, though.  In my exper...
Vienna Acoustics Bach Grand
I have pairs of the bach grand and mozart grands that I bought when Best Buy dropped the line back in 2011.  In my experience these are very setup dependent speakers.  The small drivers mean there isn't a lot of punch and the surprisingly deep bas...
B&W 805 Nautilus for PC?
terrible how?  Those are a little bit bright and will be brighter nearfield.  They also don't have the best off-axis response so if I were you I'd point them directly at you.  You might need some felt or something over the tweeters to lower the tr...
Speakers are the first piece of the puzzle
I remember reading an interview with a dealer where the dealer recommended spending most of the money on electronics for a new system and then upgrading speakers later.  I thought about it for a while and realized that this is the best for a deale...
Physics of downward firing woofers
Sound travels at about 1087 ft/second so the length of a 40 hz bass wave in 1087/40=27 feet.  Carpeting won't have any significant effect on a wave that long.  It's why bass traps have to be so big.
