If I were going to try to reinforce an mdf box the first thing I'd look at is porcelain floor tiles.  They're incredibly stiff and tough.  They don't resonate much but what little they do is at a high frequency.  I'd think combining them with mdf ...
Bass is clearer and more impactful when I stand vs. when I sit
This is normal. Over time I’ve realized that a great way to mitigate this is to have speakers that begin to drop off slowly at a relatively high frequency. You don’t want speakers that are flat to 30hz. You want speakers that begin to drop off at ...

@solobone22  that speaker is still taken apart in the corner of the garage.  Maybe I'll get to it and maybe I won't.  I've already done 2 repairs and bought a replacement part.  Knowing that I need at least two more parts to get them working has m...

Sounds like a fried tweeter to me. I think what causes it is when the leads break, the strands tend to be touching at low volume but at high excursions they lose contact and then regain it, causing a crackling sound. I recently had this problem wi...
We spend too much time talking about tweeters
I don't think the percentage of the sound is the key.  It's the percentage of potential problems with the sound.  If the tweeter only produces 5% of the sound but 50% of the potentially troublesome problems then it deserves more attention.  I hard...

@yyzsantabarbara1, Your experience sounds very similar to mine.  I had a single amp that was 200 w/ch into 8 ohms, around 300 into 4, and not specd into 2.  It sounded ok with my 3.7s but I was motivated enough to buy a second one when my local st...
Speaker recommendation $1000 or less you've had in your home
Thiel 2 2, fantastic.Slightly warm, extremely satisfying clean, clear, lively sound.  Great imaging, good resolution but not hyper detailed.  Had I bought these as my first really good speakers that might've been the end.
I Was Considering Active, Then I Watched This ...
The passive only crowd is heavy on condescension and light on knowledge or understanding.  Almost everybody is looking for the best they can afford.  Sure, there are people who don't care about the difference between $300 and 3 million but I doubt...
Speaker upgrade for classical music
I definitely think trying fundamentally different types of designs is a good idea.  If you had a chance to hear some Martin Logans or Quads that'd be great, Magnepan is a different spin on the panel design.  There are some cone speakers that use s...

That is quite a list, zero relationship between price and distortion.  There's some seriously expensive stuff way down at the bottom.
Speaker upgrade for classical music
I'd guess that almost any speaker you carefully is going to be a huge improvement over the Polks.  They're probably good for the money but compromises in floorstanders at that price point are huge.I'd have a hard time saying no to these for 8k.  T...
I have atcsm40 want possible alternative
Has anyone with older ATCs gotten the tweeter upgraded and found that the new tweeters improve low volume performance?  I've got a fairly recent pair, around 2012, but they still have the old tweeter.  They sound great when you crank them up a lit...
Do speakers choose your music preference
I definitely think there is something to this.  In my experience you need a decent sized woofer to give the right punch and energy above the deepest bass.  A pair of bookshelf speakers with a sub can sound almost indistinguishable from large floor...
Vienna acoustic morzart
@stereo5, I've heard macs a few times I think but I never spent real time with them.  I'm just going by what many others say about the mac sound.
Vienna acoustic morzart
I've got a pair of the Mozart Grands that I got cheap at Best Buy when they dropped the line back in 2010.  They are finicky.  In my experience they can be very enjoyable but they can also be terrible.  They do very deep bass for their size but th...
