Gold Lion KT77 tubes for Primaluna Amp - a few questions Sure, not a problem. Also have a PL prologue 4 I have gone through with copper caps. Am pretty sure I have before and after pics. Not too difficult of a job. If you lived nearby would say just bring yr amp over and can walk you through the steps.
Shipping speakers Craters and freight forwarders could be rough on the speakers. for big heavy studio gear, have used Plycon with great success. ask them for a quote for their Blanket wrap. They will wrap the speakers in heavy pads, then get tied to the wall of one...
Tweeter Capacitor Upgrade (Coincident PREs) another vote for Jupiter or Jensen copper foil caps. great caps in a reasonable price range. The Duelands are nice, but physically too large to fit in most apps, unless you build an outboard cross over box.
Life of KT150 tubes on ARC Amps I would be surprised if the KT-150s are worn out after 2400 hours. 3000 to 4000 hours may be a better point to pull and test. If you are that concerned why not get them tested. I use KT-150s on a daily basis and have periodically tested them. Quit...
Looking for a new (used) phono preamp to replace EAR834 The EAR is a nice unit. have you thought about the Yoshino upgrades?if not, the Manley Chinook is a step up. and another unit to look at is the Tavish Design Phono stage. super well built and very good sounding.
Sorry redundant Best DAC under 600. agree with 1mark2, go for the Ares DAC. it competes with DACs at the 1K level and above.
Akai 747 w/DBX question I would demag the entire tape path. The key in demag'ing is to move the unit sloooowwwwly. If you move it fast across the heads very little demag will happen and you can actually increase the mag level on the heads. it will vibrate a little since ...
Questions from a Tube Preamp newbie would agree with hifiman, the 12au7 series of tubes should last a very long time; not like power tubes where you'll get a few years out of them and they need to be replaced. would also suggest not to rule out the industrial grade tubes such as th...
Akai 747 w/DBX question I would suggest demag'ing the heads every so often. Otherwise you will lose high freq response. Just make sure you use a demager with a protective tip and move the demager SLOWLY, you want remove magnetic fields from the heads not add them. I dema...
Anyone in or near Ann Arbor? you may want to consider an RIAA EQ playback LP and measure the output voltage of your phono stage for each freq before you do anything. Once you have a flat response, then you can decide if a change is needed.
Akai 747 w/DBX question I would take a pass on the dbx unit. If you really feel you need noise reduction would look at one of the pro units, dolby A 363, or a Dolby SR unit. Other three options would be 1. get a set of half track heads for your 7472. install a Vishay foi...
Next step up from the Sumiko FT-3 simao, took a look at your phono pre. would still say the same, plus a few other upgrades. 1. replace load resistors with vishay VSR foils2. black cube appears to use a wall wart for power, replace with decent sized linear power supply. 3. replace...
Next step up from the Sumiko FT-3 I would not sell the FT3. pretty nice arm. I used to have both the FT3 and FT4. For a kilo buck, you might look at what you can do with your phono stage. did not mention what you were running, but first thing would be to add some vishay foil resis...
Manley Chinook or Any comparable Preamp? I would pop for the chinook. the last year I was trying out a number of phono stages in the 2k to 5k range. The chinook is really good with MC or MM. takes a big jump if you rolll in some NOS valves for the 1st position.
DAC upgrade would suggest you take a look at Denafrips PONTUS dac. 1800 bucks and can even do a trial period. if you are not happy you can send back. |
