Totem Rainmaker or Dynaudio Excite 12 or Kef Q900
If my budget was $1200, I'd get the Monitor Audio Silver RX6's, no question. And I'd either power them with the Naim or sell both amps and get a Marantz PM8004.
Anyone know what these funky vintage speaker are?
07-16-12: NonoiseThat first photo looks like something Tim Burton would have used in a movie starring Johnnie Depp. That depends on the movie. I think Willy Wonka's speakers would been the Vivid Giya G3.And although the speaker has been identified,...
Phono Pre Amp Recommendation
Interesting. I also lost most of my LP collection (in 1979) to a flood. After 3 years with a Cambridge 640P I upgraded 3/11 to the Jolida JD9A. I happened to have some NOS Sylvania Gold 5751s and replaced the stock 12AX7s with those. I also put Her...
Speakers for Rega Brio R and/or Nad 326bee
It makes sense that Rega speakers would work well with the Brio R.
Totem Rainmaker or Dynaudio Excite 12 or Kef Q900
Also note that that Stereophile review of the Monitor Audio RX6 includes a brief comparison to the Dynaudio Excite X12. They are the same price.
How to get the impact of a live concert?
07-13-12: AudiofeilA bottle of Boone's Farm and a hit of orange sunshine. Now that's impactfulYes, but I don't wake up with a banging headache after attending a concert.
Totem Rainmaker or Dynaudio Excite 12 or Kef Q900
Stereophile has a full review with test results of the Q900 here. At this price range, however, for a column to compete with a stand-mounted speaker, I recommend you also consider the Monitor Audio Silver RX6 ($1250/pair) and RX8 ($1750/pair). The...
How to get the impact of a live concert?
I just went to a symphony concert Thurs. night--Ligeti's "Atmospheres," R. Strauss's "Also Spracht Zarathustra," and Host's "The Planets." Big, bombastic, large scale orchestral works. Generally speaking, it's a unique experience. However, the rig...
Would Martin Logan Spires benefit from subwoofer?
Run the MLs full range including their powered woofers and blend in the JL below that. The Spires provide an extra advantage for integration with the sub thanks to the Spires' +/- 10dB woofer adjustment centered at 35 Hz.
Anyone tried out Vincent Audio Intergrated?
The Vincent 150 wpc hybrid power amp was considered THE sub $1K amp (at the time) in the TAS review. That was around 5 years ago. Nothing stands still. I recommend you listen to a Marantz PM8004 integrated amp (with built-in phono stage, no less) ...
Vintage Power Amp vs new age power amp
Good sound is where you find it. You can't exactly make a sweeping generalization about vintage vs. modern, but you can apply a few principles, also knowing that just when you have formulated a rule of thumb, along comes a unit that defies it.In g...
New phono preamp vs NAD 1020
Save your money for a Jolida JD9. You will get a much bigger increment in performance up from a 640P or V-LPS than you get moving up to one of those from the NAD. I say this as someone who upgraded from the Cambridge to the Jolida. In fact, I have ...
Ideas on speaker like Magnepan but with high WAF
In some ways I feel that a good pair of minimonitors comes closest to approximating the planar speaker experience for these reasons: 1) Well engineered mini-monitors have more of the total price in the drivers, and therefore can be very light and ...
How to get the impact of a live concert?
Klipschorn: 105 dB at 1 watt input. Max 125 dB, which is about 5dB beyond threshold of pain, and requires about 125 wpc to reach it.I had a pair of Altec 9845A studio monitors. About 101 dB on 1 watt input. I could make a big band record sound liv...
REL G-2 or JL Audio F-112
If you want a sub that does both music and HT extremely well, the JL product line does that--powerful, subterranean bass for HT, fast, musical, linear response for music.
