Cartridge headshell, what would you choose and why?
griffithds                        12-02-2015 2:53pmThe Sumiko's and the Jelco's are the same head shell except the Jelco's have the arm finger lift attached. The Sumiko's do not. The LP/Gears ''Zupreme'' is the Jelco version of the same Sumiko's....
No cartridge is good enough.
In a round table discussion of some mastering experts (reported by TAS of S'phile a few years ago), in response to a question about unique properties of vinyl vs. digital or analog tape, Bernie Grundman theorized that the kinetic aspect of the sig...
Vinyl?
^^^ True enough, and it also depends on the quality of the DAC between the digital file and the cutter.Quite often my digital-sourced LPs sound better than the CD version on my home system because the DAC London or EMI used to cut the master is wa...
No cartridge is good enough.
Here’s an alternate thought: Although the cartridge’s challenges and shortcomings are well known, perhaps it has a decided advantage in the symmetry of the kinetics at both ends of the signal chain: The cartridge traces the physical analog of the ...
Are Dust Covers a MUST
I have a turntable with a dustcover. If you saw the dust that accumulates on my dustcover, you wouldn't be asking whether they're necessary, but where to buy one.I guess you could cut a rectangle of shower curtain and drape it on the record player...

This is what the typical consumer group considers the 5 best turntables
Paraneer makes a couple of good points. Today there are so many things vying for a consumer's expendable income. Back in the "golden age of stereo," the mid'60s to early '80s, adjusted for inflation we spent far more on audio equipment and it was ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
griffithds12-03-2015 7:53pmThe format itself, the CD4 might be a dead horse, never to be ridden again, but both the Shibata and the 100K resistance loading remain with us so this JVC/Victor/Shibata history is a bit interesting.Another lasting ben...
Vinyl?
A bad-sounding record can also come from bad mastering--too much compression, rolled-off bass, etc.If the original recording was 16/44.1 digital on a home computer, you're not likely to get good sound from it. I have a 2007 REM album that was pres...

Did I say 62? Tonight I discovered that I have an original Ray Charles "Modern Sounds in Country & Western, vol. II" in mono. It was too noisy to play in stereo. Sounds much better with my mono cartridge, with a few rough edges.
Floorstander or Larger Monitor With Voicing Like KEF LS50?
You could get a JL E-sub e-110, which has a high pass filter to send back to the mains. That would increase dynamics and handling capacity for the KEFs and the JL would do the heavy lifting to pressurize a larger room. Much less money than the Ref...

... or even a $112.65-189 experiment for the ATMONO3/LP.That’s a small price for proof of concept. You could always take your time to research and pick the ultimate mono cart. In the meantime, that ATMONO3/LP takes care of all the stereo vs. mono ...

Personally I have no experience with Orsonic, which makes multiple models, A cursory look at Google returns show an AV1s, AV1b, AV101s, AV101b, AV11s, and Av11b. I don't know the distinctions, and the eBay listings don't seem to differentiate eith...
