Abandonning Powered Speakers - Why?
Merge,One correction - the Meridian's interface to their speakers is not proprietary - although with Merifdian equipment takes advantage of MHR communication, the speakers will also accept standard PCM input from any transport, processor, etc.
How do you determine how much to spend on speakers
At CES 2004, Dave Wilson was trying to answer this age-old question in a creative new way - he set up a pair of $16,000 competitor's speakers powered by Krell electronics and driven by a very high end ($20k+) transport system. He secretly drove his...
Opinions please Meridian vs ATC active speakers
Most of Meridian's speakers are now DSP (digital into the speaker). I own them and believe they have many advantages (and sound wonderful). I suggest you read Bob Stuart's white paper at http://www.meridian.co.uk/w_paper/DSP_speakers_scr.pdf. It's...
Abandonning Powered Speakers - Why?
Eldartford,Before I begin, let me admit that I have been an Active speaker user for 15 years (Meridian) and a Meridian DSP speaker user for the past year. I drank the whole jar of Kool-Aid. With that disclaimer:In fact, Monoblocks are not at all t...
ipod and dac?
I like to think I have quite a fine home system, and there's no doubt my iPod doesn't come close for critical listening. Nevertheless, I LOVE MY IPOD. I have the 40GB version and have ripped over 900 CDs into iTunes at 128K AAC files. There's no d...
Isolation/coupling: basics?
My 2 cents1) I have observed that CD's copied at a higher speed are less reliable. I attribute this to the shorter amount of time the laser has to burn the pit into the substrate.2) Much is made of the error correction affecting the sound in CD pl...
Arrows direction on MIT
Thsalmon,They may be indicating where the shield is grounded, but my cable manufacturer (Analysis Plus) recommends that all shields be grounded at the preamp - in a "star" configuration" so that there's a single ground reference for the shields.
Do you own the last amp you'll ever buy?
I got rid of my last amp 12 years ago - went with active speakers. Now I'm into Meridian DSP speakers, so I don't expect I'll ever buy another amp - ahhhh the freedom from decisions...
Skipping on Meridian 506.20
Some of the original Philips transports used by Meridian were shipped with the wrong lubricant - such as my 500 transport - and, with age, they become less forgiving. Eventually it will skip more and more.A quick trip to Meridian (or a locally aut...
Home Automation and High End Audio?
I use X10 to control lighting in my room. I have dedicated circuits for my system, so I'm not too concerned about the noise - even the dimming modules seem quiet (compared to mechanical dimmers).I don't think I'd use an x10 appliance module to pow...
Found Monster cables inside my Watt Puppy 5.1's
You probably blew them because you UNDERpowered them - the chief cause of clipping - and blown speakers. Most speaker can handle megawatts of clean power, but 50 watss of clipping will kill almost anything. As for the bass - sounds like you may hav...
How can multiple woofers generate lower frequency?
The truth is that these drivers all have output down to, say, 22Hz, but a single driver can't provide enough usable output to rate the speaker + or- 3dB to 22Hz -perhaps only 28 Hz.Add more drivers, you have more usable output at low frequencies, ...
Which Pre/Pro regardless of $$$
Avguygeorge,I agree on the 568 (and .2) If you look at my system, you'll see that's what I have. Since the thread title said "regardless of price" I figued that Capnizzy had so much money, it didn't matter to him. (unlike us mere mortals). ;-)
Which Pre/Pro regardless of $$$
Regardless of price? the Meridian 861 is certainly among the best available.
