Which Speaker in the 4-6K Range? The virgo is one to check too. I think it only goes to 31khz, but it is very controlled. Sensitivity is around 89 (?) range. They pull off a great disappearing act. They must be out in the room to do it though.
"The Audio Critic" B.S. or what? I just checked out this magazine. My measure of an audio magazine is how much I agree with it. For example, I tend to agree with TAS or Stereophile magazine descriptions of 'transparent', 'warm', or has 'digital haze'. I read Peter Azcels 'lies' a...
Good stand-alone phono preamp? I just did this research. For the low end, rotel is supposed to make a good $200 unit. For medium end ($600), I read the lehman black cube and mccormack phono stages are well regarded. Higher end, I heard that the $1500-2000 Sonic Frontiers and BA...
Magic with Magneplanars? In my experience/preference, tubes are great w/maggies. I tried vt100 and mv-50. Both were wonderful. The vt100 was the best, quite a bit clearer, the mv-50 warmer w/very forward midrange. Check out an earlier thread in this forum on amps for magg...
Cosmetic Repair You can try using an automotive polish/swirl remover then an automotive wax. I don't know what the chemicals would do to your particular plastic, so try it out first. I have found this effective to remove faint marks from automotive paint and plas...
Vinyl or wait for the new stuff?? Merits to both formats. Some of the brand new digital recordings such as 'Pat Metheny and Jim hall', and the diana krall recordings sound excellent on my 44khz player. I would guess that they use tube mics to get that nice warm sound. On my equiva...
Best Customer Service (Manufacturer) Pass labs does rule. I called them up to ask about phono stage matching. They actually went and got their 'phono guy' on the phone to help out. Outstanding. I've had Peter help me out via email too. It's obvious they go the xtra mile, and are happ...
Opinions Needed: Active or passive pre I experience the EXACT same thing related to volume control. Also the interconnects are a factor. When I use my red dawn interconnects, the passive preamp has a little more juice than when I use my much lower end esoterica audio interconnect. Also...
Tube amp with Maggi 1.6? There is another great thread on amps for maggies. I had a set, and I found that tube amps sounded quite a bit better than solid state. My other speakers tended to treat tube amps and ss much more equally. Not everyone has this opinion ! I drove m...
Vinyl or wait for the new stuff?? I just bought a rega 25 w/600 arm and super elyse cartridge. I also bought an ARC ph-3 phono preamp (outstanding!). I chose the rega partly because it is considered 'set and forget' whereas some high end players need constant expert adjustment. On...
Svetlanta really going under? Speaking of, has anyone tried their el-34 'mullard copy' tubes. I am thinking of putting some in my conrad-johnson mv-50. It has siemens/dynacos in it right now.
Audio Research LS12 Opinions/Reviews I heard it when I auditioned the pass aleph/volksamp 30 amps. We had a wadia 830 driving it. First we played it with the preamp then with the wadia driving direct. The preamp added quite a bit of cloudiness to the recording. The salesman remarked ...
do tubes rock ?? Hey Trelja, Glad to see we politely agree to disagree ! Can you use a mesa baron as a guitar amp ? How would you connect the outputs of the guitar into this ? Now that I'm thinking of it, I'm going to retube my fender with some alternate 6L6 tubes...
Opinions Needed: Active or passive pre A passive preamp does have it's negative aspects too. There is more detail, but you loose a certain 'fullness' to the sound when you completely depend on your source. Some sources are not up to the task of driving a passive preamp. For example my ...
do tubes rock ?? Got me ALL riled up ! I think the el-34 is THE more definitive rock sound. A little 5881 vs el-34 comparison. I've only seen the 5881 used in the Mesa Baron high end amp which has an 'upgrade' to the el-34. My friend who owns one claims this is a ... |
