Gordon Lightfoot, Canadian folk legend, dead at 84
I've been a fan since high school. I have all of his albums including the obscure "Two Tones at the Village Corner". I hope they decide to release this on CD and maybe include other tracks as a CD allows. Really great stuff. Joe
All Stocked Up and Nowhere To Play
In defense of the tableless people who bought vinyl; 12 inch LP's also represent an artform that went away when CD's took over. Even though I mostly listen to CD's these days, it always depresses me a bit when I think about enjoying a nice gatefol...
Audio Research REF 6 to REF 6SE upgrade.
I figure that if my grandson gets into audio that by 2070 he'll be able to buy an upgrade to his Audio Research Reference 50 Mark 15 for a mere $$25,000!
Songs with excellent advice?
It's an easier question to ask; Which songs don't give advise? People try to find meaning in songs where there is NONE. I remember an interview with Paul Simon where he was asked the meaning of "You can call me Al". He shrugged his shoulders after...
How To Keep Cat Off Stereo Equipment?
I was at a friends house recently. There were snakes on his car outside! Well, it turned out they were rubber snakes that he placed there. He said he read that they keep squirrels away and it worked! (Squirrels did $3000.00 worth of damage to one ...
Sat front row at the symphony...
I had the same experience lately as the OP. I don’t get out much so I haven’t seen a live show in a LONG time. One of my friends plays the accordion in a polka band. Now I’m not into polka (If I was I wouldn’t tell anyone!). However, I’m not oppos...
If you had to narrow your choices to 4 - 5 speakers
No Acoustic Zen fans here?
Are audiophile products designed to initially impress then fatigue to make you upgrade?
bigtwin, you hit the nail on the head! I'll add to it; The only thing worse than not being able to find that elusive LP is finding it! The thrill is in the hunt.
Used vs. new
Buying used can be better than buying new. Frequently, new innovations that sound great upfront have caveats down the road. New materials that are supposed to be better turn out to be inferior in a couple of years. Premature deterioration for inst...
Some famous reviewers have atrocious listening rooms!
I recall an article where Fremer talked about the incoming AC service in his building as being compromised as it was literally hanging off the building. Repairs were done and he claimed his system sounded much better. I remember thinking "Does tha...
Better story teller than Edmund Fitzgerald?
Wow! This list hits many of the artists near and dear to me. I got on the board of our local coffee house years ago just to get my mitts on their tapes. Man do I have a collection. This list could never be complete without the late great STAN ROGE...
Did the Old Receivers Sound Good?
I had a Pioneer SX1250 in 1976 I think it was. I loved it at the time. (less than $600.00 at the PX). When I came home with it, I bought an Onkyo 303 preamp from CRAZY EDDIE. I used it with the amp section of the Pioneer. I couldn't believe my ear...
How do you stop house guest from damaging your speakers?
Actually, the knuckle rap test has been done by more than a few speaker reviewers over the years. I ONCE suggested to an audiophile friend to do the rap test on a set of Pioneer speakers I had at the time. He commented that I had down graded to Pi...
Speakers with deep/powerful bass
I had the Snell Type A V5 system. It was fun to bring a newbie into the listening seat and hit them with deep percussion. (18 inch subs) Even their wife downstairs would jump when the walls rattled!
Those singers you enjoy,....that don't really have a great voice?
If you like Bob Dylan then Tony Bird needs to be on this list. I've mentioned him several times over the years on these posts. Nobody ever commented on him. It;s a shame. He was a GREAT stage act. He was a white guy from Africa who moved to NYC. P...
