Biggest Sonic Improvement
Cables are antennas, and to hear the music properly, they have to be bandwidth limited. The best answer is Transparent Cables. If budget does not allow, then Walker Audio High Definition Links used with any other speaker cable works wonders!!
Need help : Mit or Cardas?
Interesting thing about Transparent cables. I auditioned a set and was disappointed - seemed that the frequency extremes were down in level and dynamics were weak. After discussing with other owners and Transparent, I decided to leave them in the ...
New Pioneer Elite DVD soon w/Prog. Scan?
From what I have read, it seems Pioneer does have an elite progressive scan unit coming - DV-08 I believe. No idea of the release date.
Vandersteen 2ce sigs and Adcom gfa555
To my ear, in comparison to live music, the Vandersteens are anything but "super dull and lifeless." You have a great speaker - one that can get more music to you than the "Hi-Fi" speakers so many seem to be fond of these days - which end up givin...
Best Subwoofer?
I agree that the Vandersteens are best for all the reasons that "MWP" points out. But I believe one additional reason they are the best is their speed. They use 3-8" drivers. THe speed and accuracy of the 8" drivers cannot be matched by ANY 12"-15...
Cables with Conrad Johnson tube gear
I have no direct experience with CJ stuff - but have used tube gear (ARC/BAT). IMHO, Transparent cables are the most equipment independent cables on the market and I believe can make significant improvements to ANY system. As Dennis Miller says in...
What have YOU got?
Carl, Carl, Carl ... who got you started?
What preamp to use?
The GFP is a good unit but your system deserves something better. I would recommend auditioning a Convergetn Audio Technologies SL-1; an Audio Research LS-25; or a Balance Audio Technology VK-5SE. Alternatively you could consider a used ARC Ref 1 ...
Best CD Player under $1000
I might first buy an outboard DAC and use my existing transport. The Bel Conto DAC-1 is an upsampling DAC selling around $1000. I think it will make the most dramatic change in your system along the lines of the sound you are looking for. It is a ...
Lexicon MC-1 vs. high-end DAC
I agree with Mjaudio completely. The MC-1 is hands down the best unit for Home Theater (at any price IMHO). As a stereo pre-amp it is "Mid-Fi" compared to what a separate DAC/Pre will do for you. With the right DAC/Pre, change in sound should be c...
Amplifier Suggestions?
In the $2500-$3000 price range you could consider a used BAT VK-60 (60 wpc) tube unit, or a used VK-200 (200 wpc) solid state unit. Both are exremely musical and would be a great match for the Vandersteens. Size of room and listening levels would ...
Entry Level Tube Amp CD Player Direct.
I would imagine that the system does in fact sound the way it did 20 years ago, but that two dynamics are at play. First is that memory is selective. Since the sounds was so impressive at the time (and it likely was), the memory is that it was "th...
Preamp recommendation for Bryston 3BST
Adcom GFP-750 is a great unit if you want something "almost new." If you consider something a little older, several Audio Research units can be had around $1K.
SS amp for Audio Research LS-16 pre-amp
I might suggest a BAT VK-200 amp and Kimber interconnects.
Entry Level Tube Amp CD Player Direct.
IMHO CDs need a pre-amp as without one, the sound may appear to be "cleaner" (more analytical) but the music lacks the life (rich dynamics) that a good pre-amp can give it. Give a listen to the Vandersteen Model 1 or 2 speakers along with some Rot...
