Review: Aric Audio Super 6SN7 preamp
op well done i have not had an opportunity to try one of his units, but by all accounts eric is a really great guy, designer, craftsman, and his gear is terrific i would just point out that while it was regarded as a mid- to upper-tier tubed li...
ProAc Response 2: CJ CAV45, Cary SEI 300B, or Cary Rocket 88?
unless the room is pretty small or you like to listen quite softly, 300b is ruled out cav 45 vs rocket88 a matter of taste, both are on the tubey, rich slow side, treble will be sweet, midrange will be luscious, but bass will be bloomy and little...
Is advice from a constant upgrader to be avoided
these last few posts are a good discussion, perhaps a bit unnecessarily snippy, but the debate and clarification and sharpening of points back and forth are useful and enlightening to those readers who are following, if they have the patience to d...
Solid state amp recommendations for Maggies?
op as usual, scott (@verdant) provides good input i would only say additionally that in my travels, i can confirm that maggies are one brand of speaker (atc from the uk being the other) that are seemingly modestly priced speakers, but they are t...
Does Time alignment and Phase coherency make for a better loudspeaker?
the fundamental problem with any question like this is of course any one element of successful design can matter, but the specific impact of that element can only be felt only if all else is equal... design of something as complicated as a loudspe...
Is advice from a constant upgrader to be avoided
@hilde45 @jjss49 Well said and I agree. It’s not a bad way to decide on medical advice. Don’t trust the loudest voices or the ones with agendas behind their advice. lol - when my parents got old and sick with cancer, we would visit an oncolog...
Subwoofer cable question
always better to connect rel subs to your amplifier high level outputs for better sound, all rel's since the early 90's have a high level connection https://rel.net/blog/2019-11-12/sound-insights/what-is-a-high-level-connection/

i know this is a discussion forum with mainly bored geezers entertaining themselves sipping coffee with background music, but let’s be serious for a minute how do you get information and advice on anything if it is really important to you? first...
So I just bought a Hegel H390 and
i would only say, to what troy posted below, that in my experience owning and comparing the 190, 390 and 590 units, that the 390 and 590 played music with a noticeably more refined, and laid back treble response, and with even more command/richnes...
Different R2R DACs
just a word to the wise on getting too caught up in dac architectures as a proxy for what a unit sounds like - it is 100% a fool's game there are r2r dacs that are forward, there are delta sigma dacs that are absolutely pure and musical sounding,...
So I just bought a Hegel H390 and
My understanding is that the new 390 is essentially the same as the top dog 590.     depends on how one defines ’essentially’ -- useful information on the differences (but bear in mind their findings are using the dac + amp sections of each u...
Have you ever been turned off by an Arrogant Dealer? Thoughts
Have you ever been turned off by an Arrogant Dealer? I have and it’s extremely disappointing ahhh ... the travails of life as a well heeled hifi and music lover life is hard, ..... and then we die... 😓
Does Time alignment and Phase coherency make for a better loudspeaker?
@jjss49 , flat is always the best place to start.   not debating that point (starting point, reference point) - my statement refers to aiming for a perfectly flat measured speaker response as a sonic end point
Adding an ignore list feature to audiogon
i think the feature would be kinda nice, but for me, not really necessary, as when i scroll down, it is easy to roll right past the polluter's names and their thick blocks of inane text - so no biggie
