what’s a song cover that you think is better than the original? @inscrutable, thanks for the rec! I hadn’t heard their version before. You’re correct that it’s a unique approach to the song, and a really good one. Beautiful harmonies and strong individual singing.
what’s a song cover that you think is better than the original? K.D. Lang’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is superior to Cohen’s original and to all the other covers I’ve heard (and there are a lot of them). Her cover is on “Hymns of the 49th Parallel,” a terrific disc of her covers of other songs writ...
Class D Integrated Amplifier Recommendations. Take a look at Wyred4Sound’s integrateds. Good stuff in your price range.
Old CDs and records Most public libraries lend CDs and therefore accept donations of used CDs. In my experience, the library especially appreciated donations of classical and jazz music. A library won’t value your CDs for charitable donation purposes, but ItsDeducti...
SQ or performance? I agree that sound quality has a major influence on my enjoyment of a recording. If I have two recordings of the same piece, I’ll play the better recorded one far more often regardless of performance. This is especially true for recordings of piec...
Who uses ADS Speakers Like Imaninatural above, I bought ADS L710s in 1980. I had saved enough money from my first decently-paying job to replace a KLH model 5 (the portable one) that had been stolen from me three years before. Kept them more than 30 years before tradin...
In Classical music the effect of SQ on appreciation Interesting thread. I’ll chime in, beginning with a caveat: I do not consider myself expert in either classical music interpretation or classical music recording. That said, I listen largely to classical music, mostly solo piano and small group. I...
Beautiful Music That Reduce You To Tears Bach’s Chaconne in D minor from Partita No. 2.
RIP oregonpapa I always enjoyed Oregonpapa’s posts. May his memory for a blessing.
A decent integrated amp under 2K ... Take a look at the Wyred4Sound STI-v2. Class D. Volume, balance, and phase controls; nothing you don’t need. Originally $2500, now $1300. Way, way more power than you need (it’s certainly more than I need) but it sounds very good. Good luck! Jim
Rel Does Not Recomment Isolation Stands Artemus_5, thanks for your response. My objective is exactly what you wrote: to “make the mains sound better.” I don’t want a sub to provide more bass per se. I’ll likely bring a REL home to see if it can live on my hardwood floors without rattlin...
Rel Does Not Recomment Isolation Stands Thanks for posting this, @artemus_5. I’m shopping for a sub, and REL was at the top of my list. The sub is going to be on a suspended floor, and any rattle will be unacceptable. I think it likely that I would buy an isolation platform, but if usin...
The Most Philosophical Song You Ever Heard Bob Dylan — Like A Rolling Stone (“when you ain’t got nothing, you got nothing to lose,” for just one example). But femoore12’s nomination of Tennessee Ernie Ford’s 16 Tons deserves a +1.
Classical Music for Aficionados Shostakovich: 24 Preludes and Fugues for Piano.i prefer Scherbakov’s recording, both the playing and the sound quality, over Jarrett’s. I haven’t heard Nikolayeva’s or any others. |
