Best way to organize 6000 albums?
I have about 5000 and they are first separated by genre as Albertporter does, but the genres are limited to Jazz, Rock and Classical, plus a catch-all catagory for those that don't really fit into those catagories, such as Walter Carlos, Tomito, e...
Which used tubed pre-amp & turntable for convert?
You may want to keep the Audible Illusions M3A on your short list of pre-amps. It's a highly regarded pre with a good phono section for higher output cartridges OR get the optional (and excellent!!) Gold phono board for low output (On the subject ...
78's through the system
Rega makes a 78 rpm version of the P3 and possibly the P2. Perhaps one could even economically convert a standard P3 or P2 to 78 rpm by changing one or both of the pulleys. Although the P2/P3 headshell is not removable, Gregm correctly points out ...
Convert Me
To add to Tswhitsel's post, the Audible Illusions M3A is also available with a solid state phono section for low output cartridges. Designed by John Curl, it is an outstanding value and gotten great reviews, although I'm sure some of the outboard ...
Hum a problem with Planar 25/ Grado cartridge?
I have no real personal experience with the problem, but my understanding is that the level of hum can range from almost non-existant to significant depending and it varies from one particular set-up to another. The hum seems to become more pronou...
TOTALLY CONFUSED about analog
I'm having a little difficulty undestanding why there are numerous off-subject posts on this thread, especially the diatribes against analog. Audiogon provides a nifty forum for digital for those who are so inclined. How is this type of post helpi...
TOTALLY CONFUSED about analog
Bishopwill-Regarding surface noise (as well as the original question on cartridges)- I noticed a remarkable decrease in surface noise in going from a Sumiko Talisman (a somewhat modest high output MC) to a Benz LO.4. To tell the complete story, or...
TOTALLY CONFUSED about analog
Ken-What is confusing you, I think, are these references to all the tweaks, modifications, specifications and opinions. A few random thoughts- 1) Are all these guys that are spending time and $$$$$ modifying their gear THAT much smarter about such...
TOTALLY CONFUSED about analog
Ken-The suggestions in the posts so far have been pretty much on-target. I'll echo what has been about a good used Rega P3 or Music Hall for your quest in your lower price range, although you would need to be careful about Grado cartridges with th...
regular vinyl pressings
OK, Sedond, I'll bite- what's a modded di/o DAC? Email me if you prefer.RegardsJim
regular vinyl pressings
The labels you are looking for will largely be determined by the type of music or specific artist you are looking for. (i.e.- Don't look for an ECM pressing of Boston or any other rock artists.) Alot of the smaller record companies do a better job...
Belt for Technics turntables
Let me let y'all in on a little secret- Projector-Recorder Belt Company in Whitewater, Wisconsin manufactures alot of OEM belts. They also make alot of the replacement turntable belts on the market today. I stumbled across the company 25 years ago...
Question about cassette player settings
Thanks for the corrrection, Swampwalker- it's been a few years since I've been involved with tapes. Although, I seem to recall at some point that chrome and metal meant the same thing as far as bias was concerned and that high quality non-metal ta...
Question about cassette player settings
As I recall, your EX,SX and ZX settings are for bias, which is part of the recording function. EX will probably match inexpensive tapes, SX for high quality tapes and ZX for the very expensive "chromium" type tapes. Your EQ settings are for playba...
Recommended phono preamps?
I have the Acurus P-10 the Doug mentioned and think it is a great value compared with most anything under $800 to $1000 (and maybe more!) I'm about to list it for sale, but if anyone on this forum would like it before it's listed, drop me an email...
