I think it really depends on the vintage of the Brystons but rest assured that at sometime either sooner or later they will need recapped and that will be quite expensive.

Popping/Skipping sound when upsampling on DAC?
I would say that the rate you are up sampling to is too much for parts of your hardware to operate properly. If you upsample to 24 96 then that will be optimum for your equipment to handle , also that sample rate is more than enough for any music ...
