The most haunting music you ever heard?
"Haunting" as in "gets inside your head and your nervous system and won't go away" -- probably, for me, an album titled "Alina," music composed by Arvo Part, on the ECM label. It is just this side of silence, and it is achingly beautiful.
Beatles covers: better than originals?
"Better" than originals? Nothing comes immediately to mind. But I do very much like Rufus Wainwright's cover of "Across the Universe," from the soundtrack for the movie "I Am Sam," which features lots of other covers of Beatles songs. As for the ne...
Tube cdp with ss units...
Cjack notes that the Jolida "JD-100 does not use op amps." I could swear I'd read that it does, but at my age memory is less than reliable, so I stand corrected. No intent to misinform.Mnnc, you ask, "What about Rega?" You don't specify a budget, ...
Tube cdp with ss units...
I’d argue that your source should provide an accurate and reliable representation of the information on the disc -- at least that's my opinion. Some tube CD players, such as the Jolida JD100, use solid state op-amps for the analog output sections,...
Best budget equipment?
For a "girlfriend" system, I also recommend the NAD 320BEE (or more recent 325BEE) amp. Easy to use, nice remote control, reliable -- and sounds good too! I would not run the Oppo directly into a power amp.Speakers -- so many to choose from. Model...
Good digital cable suggestions
Canare Digiflex Gold (some now for sale on Audiogon) gives you true 75-ohm connection and is well-built for low price. Whether it will represent an improvement over your current cable, I don't know.An almost certain improvement, but beyond your $7...

Best used speaker - Vand 2CE or Soliloque 6.3?
I owned Vandersteens for a long time -- the 2Ci, then the 2Ce, then the 2Ce Signature. Really enjoyed them. When I upgraded other components, the Vandys stayed in the system -- better amp and sources just made the speakers sing more sweetly. One n...
which dac?
Hmm--you own an Apollo? That's a very fine CD player. I've owned both the Apollo and a Bel Canto DAC2. The BC DAC is wonderful, but I can't say that it was superior to the Apollo -- just different. I haven't heard BC's new DAC3. One thing worth no...
Which speaker is best with Naim
My Naim setup (CD5i and Nait 5i) is driving Harbeth monitors (the little HL-P3s, in a room smaller than yours). The Harbeths have been a revelation and a great match with Naim -- I suggest you check out the Harbeth line. The Naims also partnered w...
Music for toddlers and parents?
Good point, Swampwalker, about "Fantasia" -- I can't recall how old my (now college-age) daughters were when they first watched it -- in any case, they were old enough to watch it fearlessly and repeatedly with delight. And a few more to add:Grieg,...
Music for toddlers and parents?
My kids are in college now but one of the great joys of raising them was watching them respond to music -- not that I was trying to teach them anything -- they just liked what they heard.Start by watching Disney's Fantasia on DVD.Just sticking to ...
New Naim CD5i-2 compared to original?
Thanks, Muzikat. Indeed, I have posted on the Naim forum the same query that started this thread. Not many people seem to have heard the new CD5i yet. I have received two conflicting opinions (but hey, otherwise it wouldn't be high-end audio, righ...
