Sub Pairing With Harbeth 40.3 XDs I'm running two JBL 2269H 18 inch drivers in two custom cabinets that are based on the JBL SUB18 cabinet. My sub cabinets are passive, ported cabinets. Crossover is a McIntosh MEN220 and the 18's are driven by a McIntosh MC500. I have a concert...
Cassette decks. How good can it get? I was a huge cassette buyer in the '80's and early '90's. My main deck was an Onkyo Integra TA-2070 which sounded quite good and recorded well. It was an expensive deck when new in '84. Bought a new 2 head Kenwood for $220 in 1989 (about all th...
HiFi Rose RS250 I was looking to try a streamer with video capability and there are few choices. This HiFi Rose unit seemed interesting, so I ordered one. I had this unit for about 48 hours before returning it. Upon firing up the unit for the first time, it w...
Placement of Single Subwoofer Affecting Sound of Main Speakers I can echo others in stating that integrating a sub or subs can be a big challenge. I’ve fought many rooms and many single sub setups over the years trying to get things to sound right. My advice is to keep trying since that sub you have seems to...
Antique Sound Labs My very good friend has a pair of these Wave 8 Antique Sound Labs mono amps. I borrowed them for 10+ years or so to use in my office. I used these with an Adcom 555 Mk II preamp with a Sumo Delilah crossover into a pair of Kef C10 cabinets (with a...
Subwoofer for music, how low? I'm also using the SVS isolation feet on my JBL subs and they really work. My pictures have stopped rattling and dropping to the floor.
How much of High End Audio is Horn Speakers? I have a pair of JBL 4349’s that use a wave guide for the high frequency driver. Essentially a horn. I don’t think I’d ever go back to a non-horn speaker. What a treat to listen to. They project and fill my listening room extremely well.
Subwoofer for music, how low? Food for thought: Kick drum fundamental can be around 50 to 90 hertz. Bass guitar fundamentals are 40 to 400 hertz. Lowest note on the piano is 27.5 hertz. A Roland 808 drum machine kick drum (used extensively in rap music) has fundamentals ar...
Speakers for a Large Room (20’x37’) +3 on the JBL Everest DD67000. Add in a pair of JBL SUB18's. Or, JBL M2's with SUB18's. The waveguides are wonderful in larger rooms.
Coiling XLRs.... yes or no? Note on a lot of pro audio stages, all the XLR cables are coiled up to keep the excess lengths tidy. As a sound tech, I've been coiling balanced cables for nearly 40 years and can't hear any difference in coiled vs. uncoiled. Hence the reason fo...
Horn speakers are really bright? Not quite (technically) horns, but the waveguides on my JBL 4349's are delightful. I can listen for hours with no fatigue and they fill my room very well. Took a bit to get the right amp and preamp match though.
Bought a new McIntosh amp I would not feel any remorse for owning a MC152. What a great amplifier. Bought my first McIntosh piece in 1990 and still have it...along with a lot of other Mc stuff bought over the years.Sounds like your path of audio improvements is (firmly) ...
Why the hate for mcintosh amps? I'm a McIntosh owner and have been for 30 years. When I was younger and would visit various hi fi shops, I would honestly be reluctant to tell the salesperson that I had McIntosh gear (if they were not a McIntosh dealer). There was plenty of per...
Best sub for music, mijostyn - Thank you for the warm welcome. I agree, pro sound / commercial amps may be all you need for subs. I have used QSC amps for decades and they are very solid performers. As well, a decent Crown professional amp isn't too expensive and ...
Best sub for music, Long time lurker, first time poster...I have to jump in and state what mijostyn stated above is excellent advise. After 30+ years in the audio world (home hi fi, car audio, Pro Audio), having large (or many) cones move very minimally is the key to... |
