Best M8080 NOS tube for CJ preamp line stage?
Watford's "6C4/CV4058 MUL/BOX ANODE" is 15 Pounds plus shipping. Any c-j lovers up for a group buy? MAYBE the price could be lower, and shipping cost per piece surely should be lower. I'd go for maybe a halfdozen. Contact me at jeffreybehr(at)cox(...
Best M8080 NOS tube for CJ preamp line stage?
Billimbriale, no, you didn't miss it. I suggested years ago to c-j that they include that info; apparently they're still not. Looking at the face of the unit, the front row, left to right, is LF, RF, LR, RR. Rear row is C and SW, left-to-right. Yo...
Best M8080 NOS tube for CJ preamp line stage?
The Mullard M8080 that c-j sells is New Old Stock. A few years ago, soon after I bought my MET-1, the 6-channel preamp that uses M8080s, I bought a BUNCH of different 6C4s/6135s. Virtually all the 6C4s were highly microfonic and so bad I tossed th...
Would this room work?
So the peak of the ceiling runs from from front to back? And from the center peak each half of the ceiling slopes down to meet the walls which are 4' high? The 17' dimension is in line with the ceiling-peak line? And then the room is 13' wide?.
replacing crossover with external one
Moving the crossover outboard is a great idea, as Ait wrote. Mine had enough room for much-higher-quality (= bigger) components, so the board is original. The board is hung from the wooden frame using long brass screws and hard-plastic tubing as s...
Ribbon Tweeters???
Ribbon tweeters, generally, sound airy, delicate, smooth (meaning NOT edgy), more like real music. I wish my speakers had 'em...but I'm working on that. :-).
Conrad Johnson PV-10A mod experiences?
WHICH MultiCaps???????????????????????? There are several versions. The RTXs, 'styrenes, are VERY-good-sounding caps and do indeed require a hundred or 2 hours to break-in and sound their best. The metalized PPMFXs are entry-level-hi-end caps, one...

Explain Amp classes & how effects sound?
Mordante, the Monarchy SE-250 meets your requirements. 250 Watts into 8, 500 into 4, biased Class A to about 50 Watts. It also uses a 6922/6DJ8 or 12AT7 tube frontend, has NO negative FB whatever, and uses MOSFET output transistors. I've had its '...
stupid question about sources, amps, and loudness
Generally, almost all audio systems have TOO MUCH Voltage gain, resulting in various combinations of not enough volume-control range, more electronic noise out of the speakers*, etc. The most-common culprit is too much gain in poweramps and second...
Wish to upgrade phono preamp caps and other
Don't change anything in your preamp until you have a schematic diagram and understand what you're doing...unless you don't care if it works. :-).
Speaker crossover mod. Your advice?
Voltage is as much a determinant of size as is capacitance. Also, film caps occupy lots more volume per Farad than 'lytics.Just make sure you read them carefully. 56uF is not unusual in a MR filter; mine had a 33uF 'lytic..
Speaker crossover mod. Your advice?
Magfan, of the 3 types of passive components in hi-cuurrent filters, coils have the least sound. Also, their resistance helps determine the Q of the filters. So one could spend a lot of money and time buying new coils with matching inductance and ...
What Product Did You Overspend On?
A VonSchweikert Visiun centerchannel speaker, even at half of RR$. It is just another expensive speaker that is so adjustable one could make it sound horrible. After a month or 2 of fooling with that, I reinstalled the Eminent Technology LFT-12 (th...
Thiel CS 3.6 amplifier selection Monarchy SM 70?
Initial impressions of the SE-160s are quite positive. They're not edgy as far as I can tell after a week; overall they sound quite good. I've compared different 12AT7s in them htis WE and have heard some differences, but all tubes were satisfacto...
