I have some regrets selling... In some ways, I regret dumping a mass market system I had many years ago. If I had it today, I could listen to it from time to time, to remind me that whatever problems my present system has, things could be far worse.
recommendations for inexpensive turntables I think that a used Music Hall MMF 5 would be worth considering. With luck, you might find one for about $280. It is said to be quite a step up from the MMF 2.
Laser Turntables; Opinions Please I do recall one review in _Hi-Fi_News_and_Record_Review_ on an early laser turntable that wasn't that positive. The laser turntable was far noisier--the records needed to be cleaner than clean--and even when all was going well, the laser turntable...
which cartridge to buy? so many... I've heard that Shure cartridges work well on a Rega.
Perfect sound forever ? Not even when new... Since I get most of my CDs from the library, I'm quite used to pops and ticks, since many discs look like they had taken a trip through a gravel pit. However, I was interested to discover that one newer disc that's not in bad shape has a defective...
Cheap Old Preamps The 3020 mentioned above does have a good reputation. However, I think that you can get the same circuit--possibly for less--in the 1020. I've heard some people who have had a 1020 claim that when they upgraded, they had to spend over a $1000 to g...
LP 12 Origin Live DC motor upgrade I too have heard really good things about the Orgin Live. I havne't heard it myself, but if I was to upgrade my LP12, I would very seriously consider the Origin Live.
Linn or VPI If you're willing to consider other turntables, you might consider a Rega P25 or P9. I haven't had any experience with either, but Rega does share some things in common with Linn. A Rega is easy to setup, and I've heard of many LP12 owners who've ...
Review: Linn Tukan Monitor I think that the original Kan is a cult favorite. I seem to recall reading a favorable "in retrospect" review within the last few years. Certainly, the resale value is pretty good for an old speaker. I'd say that if you like it, go ahead and get a...
What was your biggest priority? My most expensive component is my turntable (an old entry level Linn LP12). I got it because I was sold, er, convinced that Linn's source first thinking was the way to go. (The pretty wood LP12 base helped a bit, too.) I think source first does ha...
Linn & Schematic? need one or any advise I don't know how much you could get for the Pretek/Powertek combo. I know I've seen some Inteks (which was several hundred less, new) going for about $500--although whether the Intek actually could sell for that much in the end is anyone's guess. ...
Linn & Schematic? need one or any advise Unfortunately, I can't offer much help. But, I was in a similar position, with a Linn Intek. A couple of ideas come to my mind. First of all, your repair person might be able to work with a Linn Intek schematic--the Intek's power amp section was v...
Bose makes more than speakers... I know that Bose jokes a dime a dozen--I've made my fair share, and I liked some of the jokes above. I just wanted to clarify myself, so that people wouldn't consider me a total idiot. (I may be a bit sensitive, since I usually end up buying equip...
Bose makes more than speakers... My posting seems to have generated some...unhappy comments. I presented this clipping less for the hi-fi value and more for general education and entertainment. I hasten to say that I do not like Bose, myself. In fact, I'd buy a product from Bose ...
what does a Rectifier tube do? A rectifier turns alternating current and turns it into direct current. I don't know this from my own experience, but I've heard it said that the type of rectifier used does have an effect on the sound. |
