Linn LP12 Transcription Repair
I imagine if the LP12 runs normally once it's started up that it's OK.If I had to guess, it's more likely to be a suspension issue. The tuning of the springs might have been changed by the shop.
why don't they get it?
That Kenwood sounds like a good buy. I have an old Kenwood receiver that I bought at a thrift shop--super cheap--that has amazed me.I won't bother with any male vs. female comparisons. However, I think a lot of men would also question that Kenwood...
Attn Vinyl lovers - what CD Player do you use?
At the moment, I don't have a CD player hooked up. When I do listen to CD (which is rare--I'm guessing it's at least a month since I played one!) I use a portable CD player and Grado SR 60 headphones. My portables are mostly older--the best is pro...
Linn -- one generation ago
The tube amp idea above has merit. A number of years ago, I was considering buying a CD player, and I heard a Linn Mimik CD player, a Linn Majik integrated, and a pair of Linn Sekrit speakers. (At the time, I had an all Linn system, so this was th...
Review: Mordaunt Short Performance 6 Speaker
Actually, this review is probably better than most of what I've seen in high end magazines. It's nice seeing something different reviewed. Sometimes, it seems like it's the same components over and over and over again. Are you keeping your old Quads...
Linn Intek problem
I'm glad that my answer has helped. As for whether the Intek is worth fixing, well, that's a complicated question. The first big question is finding someone who can fix it. I am under the impression that Linn is very cautious about handing out sche...
Linn Intek problem
Your problem sounds like a problem I had with an Intek. My problem was something in the circuit that protects the output transistors from harm in case of a short circuit. The circuit basically acts like a fuse, and shuts the power off to the trans...
Grado Prestige Gold or Ortofon OM 30 Super
I use a Grado Reference Platinum on a Linn LP12. It's not perfect--probably a little too warm--but there is a sort of magic and involvement that I haven't heard with many other cartridges.Another Ortofon worth considering would be the 500 series. ...
What is PRaT
The legend about Linn dealers tapping their feet with Linn equipment is interesting. I actually saw something like this at one dealer. Any time he started a system, he'd start dancing in place. Somehow, I had the strong sense that he was doing it ...
Goldring GR-1.2, NAD 533 -- any difference?
I remember reading something that indicated that the Goldring is NOT a Rega P2 clone--the design is similar, but not the same. This would help explain why it's cheaper than the P2 or the NAD. Presumably, it won't perform as well, although, given t...
suspension vs non-suspension design
At the risk of sounding cynical, I'd guess that one reason why newer turntable designs are usually non-suspended is to lower the cost of making the turntable. In addition, the setup of a non-suspended model will usually be a lot easier, which might...
old thorens 150
I think it might be worth fixing. There is an article on www.hi-fiworld.co.uk that talks about the 150. From what that article says, it sounds like it can be a very good turntable. The address for that article is: www.hi-fiworld.co.uk/hfw/oldeworl...
Why don't kids nowadays know about Jazz and classi
In the original post, there was a comment about some educators feeling that today's kids are smarter than previous generations. Not all educators would necessarily say that. I have known many teachers who've taught for decades and who lament the q...
Who has the oldest speakers?
I have a single Wharfedale speaker made who knows when. It's definitely old--I'm guessing the sixties or early seventies. I don't think it dates to the mono era--I have the feeling that it was part of a stereo pair, with the other speaker having b...
Best PRaT CD Player for $600 or less ??
One point you should consider with the Mimik--the last I heard, Linn has discontinued service support (at least for some sorts of repairs) on its older CD players. I think this includes the Mimik--and if doesn't, it probably will in time. (Of cour...
