Favorite of Dick s Picks
2 particular faves of mine are DP 16, which many (myself included) consider to be the "Holy Grail" of Dead shows -- just a great show from the '69 era, with outstanding versions of Dark Star, St. Stephen, etc. -- and DP 14, a nice example of the '...
Antique Sound Lab
Run a search on the audioasylum.com tubes page. There have been comments about these amps recently.
college kid needs help with budget amps
How about a Bottlehead "Foreplay" kit preamp ($150) with an Adcom 535 power amp? Check out the bottlehead.com website. But be warned: tubes can be highly addictive. You may want to scrap the Adcom idea & go tube all the way. Also, check out th...
Kimber BiFocal XL - Any good? Thoughs?
'Don't think I can really capture the difference between the BiFocal's and KS 3033's in a verbal description without resorting to audio cliches that may not have a lot of meaning, especially recognizing that these things are system dependent, too,...
Kimber BiFocal XL - Any good? Thoughs?
Compare Bifocal XL's with Kimber Select 3033 -- I did & went for the 3033's.
Cary Cabling
I use Kimber Select 1020 interconnects and KS 3033 speaker cables. These cables work well with a variety of systems, but I think they're particularly good at bringing forth the harmonic magic that makes Cary equipment special.(My system: Cary CAD ...
Adcom 565 pre-amp fit here?
I owned an Adcom 565 some years back (then used in a system with with a Golden Tube SE-40 amp, JMLab Daline 3.1 speakers, Kimber PBJ and 4TC, various cd players, Linn Axix tt) and found that things opened up quite dramatically when I got rid of th...
cable help ?
To stay on budget, consider Nordost or DH Labs. (The Clayton amp is said to have internal wiring from DH Labs, fwiw.) If you can blow the budget to hell, listen to Kimber Select! (I did, and there was no turning back.)
help blown speakers
The Audes is made in Estonia I believe. 'Don't know what sort of drivers they use, but try Madisound -- they carry just about all of the well known European drivers.
anyone familiar with Audes speakers?
I remember a very positive review of Audes speakers in Listener (maybe a year ago). 'Don't remember the specific model, but I think it was a small, monitor-type, under $500. It looked promising -- perhaps the dealer can get a copy for you. Jim
Melos updates worth it?
Is there a website that describes Melos upgrades or gives current service info? melos.com is still non-functional. Btw, anyone who's interested in this topic might want to search "melos" on the tube asylum page -- I remember reading some posts las...
Richard Grey 1200S VS Chang lightspeed
RG to PS really isn't apples to apples either, but closer. That said, I listened to a Chang Lightspeed product and an RG 400 in my system and found that, sonically, the Chang did more to increase openness & spaciousness, but the RG did more to...
What to listen to. BAT, ARC, VTL
I have heard the 5's driven by all BAT electronics (VK-5i and VK-60 tube amp) at my dealer and it was a wonderful combination. I'd check out the new BAT tube amp (VK-75?), which uses the same remarkable tube as your upgraded VK-5i and the ARC VT10...
Review: Blind Faith 24BIT Reissue & Second Disk
Agree with the raves for this CD. It's a knockout, for performance and sound.
DAC with HDCD function under usd1000
Second the EAD DSP 7000 Mk. III. Very smooth presentation, not at all "in your face" but not harsh or straining. Super high quality build & parts, which would bode well for purchase used. Retailed for $2500 in another era, but I've seen them a...
