What are your favorite phono cartridges?
Using a refurb'd Technics SP-10MKII w/rewired JVC UA-7082 arm into a Bottlehead Eros stage (MM only need apply), nothing's topped the humble Ortofon VMS-30MKII. As enjoyable as the Clearaudio Maestro and SoundSmith Ebony Voice in the same setup. W...
Top 3 high compliant mm/mi cartridges
To my ears, the Ortofon VMS30MKII sounds best. The VMS20MKII is easier to find, of higher compliance and Ortofon still makes its replacement styli. The Stanton 981 HZS and Pickering XSV5000 are very nice. JICO makes Shibata replacement styli for t...
Has anyone tried the new Shunyata interconnects?
For those on a budget, do not disregard the earlier generation Shunyata ICs, as the remaining new stock is being steeply discounted by Sanctuary of Sound. If the newest design betters them, Shunyata has done quite something!
Line Array Speaker vs Point Source Speaker
That's high praise for Soundlabs when it comes from your keyboard, Duke. One thing I've learned to appreciate from my line arrays (which you've listened to in my home)is their preservation of dynamics and detail at low listening volumes. It's coun...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
One man's MM/MI endpoint:For context purposes:I've recently upgraded to an SP-10 MK2 in a nice multilayer baltic birch plinth, the table restored by Dave Cawley in the UK including his own PSU. The arm I chose is a rewired Victor UA-7082, with LP ...
A low cost way to try phono once again?
Ebay seller, "vintage_audio_lab" sells a 2 box mm tube phono preamp for $400 shipped free. It is a Taiwanese product which I bought a while back and have been very impressed with. I agree that a used table, if well cared-for, gives the best value....
Great lost lps...the 80s....synth pop and others..
While not synth pop, the first two Fleshtones lps, "Roman Gods" and "Hexbreaker" are very enjoyable "retro with a fresh twist" efforts. I'm happy to have held on to these hard to find gems.
MM cartridges and capacitance
Perhaps a naive question:If "higher than standard 47k" capacitance was known to optimize frequency response by an MM cart's designers, wouldn't they have included that higher capacitance value in the spec sheet for that cart?I use MMs almost exclu...
TriPlanar Tips
Hi Thom,Is the "-3dB @ 3Hz" primarily designed into the turntable power supply?I own an nicely working old radio station Technics SP-10 MKIIA and would like to know if/how I can optimize my table in this regard.FWIW, I have a Tri-planar arm en rou...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Some sad news: Kevin at KABUSA informed me that he has sold the last of his stock of NOS Stanton D22E/Pickering D3001E 0.2x0.7 elliptical styli. I just spent a few hours comparing these with the NOS stereohedrons and JICO shibata replacements usin...

Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
