need 15 foot IC's any suggestions?
For that length of cable, balanced is definitely prefered; however, if you don't have balanced in/ouputs all around, I'd just make my own cables. I'd suggest a higher gauge for that long of a run. I would buy at least 60 ft of 18 or 20 gauge silve...
Where stands the music of Chet Baker with you?
I'm with Stewie on this one. I actually do enjoy his singing. But I do have to say that I've always hated singers who try to do too much (especially those who don't also play an instrument). As for his trumpet playing, his work with Gerry Mulligan...
ever been duped ordering "new" CDs on Amazon?
I haven't had that problem, but I've received multiple new 2-LP sets that had two of the same disc rather than one of each.
Best headphones under $200 used?
Photon makes great points. head-fi.org is an excellent resource for headphone information. The guys over there are obsessed. I definitely recommend trying on several different headphones before you buy. If there isn't an audio shop near where you ...
Movies/TV Shows Look like Video
Jdub is right. That is most certainly an effect, and is definitely not how it is supposed to look. When you properly calibrate one of the newer TV's, you should turn off this feature. You can find a forum or article with the proper calibration met...
Best Live Album Ever...
The Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin in San Fran is a great one. I'll also agree with Transnova on the ABB/Los Lonely Boys at the Fillmore East albums. However, Mitchchavis nailed it for me with the Bill Evans rec. Waltz for Debby and Su...
So, what's your audio resolution for 2012?
I'm not going to buy any manufactured cables. Instead I'm going to refine my homemade cables. I also plan to build cables for my friends.
Best SACD Player Help Needed
I agree with the others who suggest buying a cheaper used unit. Denon 2200, 2900, 3910, or 3930 can all be found for around or under $200. The 3910 was originally about $1500, is pretty good stock, and is a favorite of the modding community. I bel...
Please Advise me on Building a System on a Budget
I almost forgot. Earlier Ivan had mentioned the Peachtree Audio iDac. It's an excellent product, but I'd also suggest trying out the iDecco. The DAC in the iDecco isn't quite as awesome, but it's still very good, the preamp is pretty good too, the...
Please Advise me on Building a System on a Budget
As far as Magnepan goes, yes I would say they're lacking in bass. Even the 3.7's could use a subwoofer. Also you need a really fast sub to integrate it well. The MMG's need a subwoofer for the best experience; however, they're definitely a good in...
Please Advise me on Building a System on a Budget
For a digital source, I do recommend using the computer; however, don't exclude hard copies. You can find a really good multi format player for $200 or less. There is almost always a Denon 3910 on eBay for ~$200, and the 2200 can be had for less. ...
Building balanced interconnects--ideas
Mitch makes some good suggestions. I'll second using the VH AirLok hookup wire. If your system is already bright, use the copper, otherwise use the silver. If you don't really need a shield, just braid three together you'll connect a +, -, and gro...
How to allocate my cable dollars.
I'll suggest keeping the generic HDMI for now. You'll find that most of the expensive HDMI's don't really change that much. What options does your dealer offer, and what's your budget? I generally feel a system with good interconnects and power bu...
Maintenance for Tube Preamps
By the way, I mentioned Cramolin but haven't used it for at least a decade. Cramolin violates some EPA regulations and was not rated as safe for plastics. Cramolin is no longer readily available, and I only mentioned it in case you happen to have ...
Your thoughts on these different tubes?..
Facten - I agree about the non-mid range response of the EL34; however, I have an original circuit design ST-70 (upgraded every component/increased capacitance, but didn't alter the circuit) that outperforms all of my 200W/ch SS gear in the bass a...
