Has anyone compared the Dinafrips Terminator II to the Terminator +?
I upgraded from the Terminator (with the latest DSP board prior to the T II) to the Terminator +. The T+ has a tonal balance and presentation almost exactly the same as the Terminator, but with a bit more detail and a smoother top end. I don't reg...
Help and Advice Needed: Cary Audio SLP-05 Preamp RMA Disaster
I think the OP is confused about RMS vs Pk to Pk voltages. The Cary DACs are rated at +/- 3v. This is 2.1v RMS, not 6v. The Holo May DAC has much higher output levels at 5.8v RMS.
Mid-fi tube vs high-end SS
@lloydc - I agree with your comment regarding toroidal transformers. They may be a bit more challenging to use in a tube amp due to their extended bandwidth (passes more AC mains noise) and sensitivity to DC (careful output stage balancing is requ...
Why would the digital optical output from my CD player be louder than that of my streamer?
Are you streaming a local file that was ripped from the same CD? I see a few possibilities. 1) The content from your steamer is a different mastering of the same album  2) the streaming service is adjusting the digital levels as part of their d...
Mid-fi tube vs high-end SS
@samureyex - still not sure why you are looking at switching to SS. If you like the sound you are getting from your tube amp but are just looking to raise the quality a bit, you could consider upgrading the decoupling capacitors.  Your amp comes ...
Hum on Tube Amp - Can't find source
@dpop - My amps have no audible hum with my ear up against the speakers. My speakers are 98db/w efficient. All tube amps don't have hum problems, and all solid state amps are not hum free.
"Best" 80's HiFi System
I thought my system from the 80s was pretty nice.    Goldmund Studio table Goldmund T3F tonearm Koetsu cartridge (can't remember which one) Spectral CD player Audio Research SP10 Preamp Krell MDA-300 monoblocks Duntech Sovereign speakers.  A...
solid core VS stranded for inside speaker cabinet
GR’s wire is a high quality oxygen free solid core copper in a PVC jacket. I’ve used it to wire up a few pair of speakers and it sounds quite good. For my latest speakers, I elected to use Neotech OCC sold core copper in Teflon. This is quite a b...
The new AudioQuest Diamond USB cable
I am using one between my Sonore Signature Rendu SE and Denafrips Gaia DDC. It sounds very nice, but the difference between the AQ Diamond and a much less expensive USB cable (I think I was using a Supra cable) was pretty subtle. I do think it's a...
Ditching Class A Amps due to Heat - Sort of a Poll
I own a pair of Pass XA60.8s which have an idle power dissipation of 400W each. I don't think I'd consider buying an amp that use more power than this at idle.  My Pass amps have not been in my system for more than nine months since I've been usi...
Rear speakers, generally of lesser quality?
When I bought my current house, there was a cheap home theater installed with in-wall speakers for five channels. I decided to take the in-wall speakers that were installed in the front and mount them in the ceiling slightly behind the seating pos...
Open Baffle Experience
@dz13 - I assume you are referring to the NX-Studios. I would say that, within their limitations, they are exceptional speakers. The NEO3 is one of the best drivers for upper midrange and treble that I’ve heard, particularly in an open baffle impl...
Question About Capacitor Upgrade in Tube Amp
I can see how adding too much capacitance to a regulator could cause the regulator to oscillate, but oscillation in tube amplifiers is rarely due to the power supply, and when it is, it's because the power supply has inadequate regulation (too hig...
Question About Capacitor Upgrade in Tube Amp
@ieales - I'd be real interested to understand how adding some film decoupling caps cross the B+ supply could cause a tube circuit to oscillate.
Toroidal vs EI power amps any difference.
Toroidal transformers are more compact and efficient. They generate less EMI, so are less likely to interfere with other circuits. If well potted, they can also be better mechanically isolated (less chance of buzzing). The biggest downside is they...
