the grado is solid, but the at150 cartridge, or garrott bros k2, or k3 will improve sound, lower the noise floor, and non will break the bank. the arm change is lateral. 
SME 20/2 sound problem. Remedy suggestions needed
there's no easy way to put this...if possible 'get the xerxes back'. otherwise experiment with other cartridges to put life into the sme

canton gle70's on audiogon for 350. museum quality..hell, i'd buy 'em if i wanted to risk divorce(again) ...a classic 3 way in a compact and beautiful cabinet...nice match with marantz as well...a steal

in all honesty, unless you're prepared to spend a bundle, the a100 with marantz should sound amazing. 
Mono VS Stereo
shadorne is absolutely correct. the artists and engineers have made records for 'stereo' since 'shep was a pup'...unless you specialize in collecting 'pre rock era' stuff, its a bit like the benefits of shoving a square peg in a round hole. 
Thorens 124 compared to new best tt
the td 124 is one of the 'coolest' tables ever. does it compete with later thorens models such as the 150,160b, 160 super, 520, 160hd, 350 and others...only if you 'think' it does. compared to most expensive and esoteric choices today..not really.... 
Mono VS Stereo
i prefer 'no channels' or 'NONO'....this gets rid of everything 'manmade'. 
Best tonearm for AirTight PC-1
'deep' bass is never 'fast' the sme is a benchmark workhorse..you're fine.

no opinion on the exposure vs other, but the polks are really keepers.

sota...performance..and resale(just in case)...sme for the same reasons.....that said, in the neighborhood are the threns 160 and sme as well (personal 'new' favorite) even though it 'looks' plain.
