Upgrade to Luxman PD-441 turntable the grado is solid, but the at150 cartridge, or garrott bros k2, or k3 will improve sound, lower the noise floor, and non will break the bank. the arm change is lateral.

Bookshelf Speaker for vintage Marantz 2230 in all honesty, unless you're prepared to spend a bundle, the a100 with marantz should sound amazing.
Mono VS Stereo shadorne is absolutely correct. the artists and engineers have made records for 'stereo' since 'shep was a pup'...unless you specialize in collecting 'pre rock era' stuff, its a bit like the benefits of shoving a square peg in a round hole.
Thorens 124 compared to new best tt the td 124 is one of the 'coolest' tables ever. does it compete with later thorens models such as the 150,160b, 160 super, 520, 160hd, 350 and others...only if you 'think' it does. compared to most expensive and esoteric choices today..not really....
Mono VS Stereo i prefer 'no channels' or 'NONO'....this gets rid of everything 'manmade'.
