How to level match when comparing components?
Then you have the real problem. Which do I *like* better, which *is* betterI hope you are joking. If those two are different in your mind, then you do have a real problem. If you start trying to please someone else, or second guess some "absolute"...
How to level match when comparing components?
I agree with Elizabeth and would take it one step further. Leave A in for a week or a month, then replace with B. Limit music during that time to that which you are intimately familiar with and best represents the range of your musical preferences...
USB to SPDIF Reclocking Adapter?
Many of the current DACs have pretty good implementation of USB/SPDIF, while some do not. Empirical's Off-Ramp and Pace Car do a fine job there. I was pleasantly surprised to find the PS Audio DLIII (a very modestly priced DAC that does a good job...
How to transfer LP to iMAC Computer
I have no direct experience with this myself, but gave one of these to my brother in-law and he seems to be very happy with it. Here you go - $99.
Most unusual/mesmerizing female voice.
Jimmdavis - thanks for Lemonflower - I ordered her CD on CDBaby (backordered there) after listening to a few of her cuts on YouTube. Beautiful voice..just lovely. If you like her then definitely try Emily Barker - "Despite the Snow" is her CD ...j...
45's in George Wright 2A3 3.5's?
Shoot an email to Roger Hug (a very fine tube repair technician in Seattle) rogerhug@earthlink.net - he is very familiar with George's amps and can probably advise you accordingly.
What am I missing? Americana?
Great to see recommendations for Richard Buckner and Jeffrey Foucault! Both brilliant songwriters and Foccault is great on guitar. I heartily agree!A few more in that come to mind:Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy / Palace Brothers / Palace Music...
What am I missing? Americana?
Those are two pretty different artists you mention. Conner Oberst is rather Alt/progressive and Ryan Adams is kind of alt-country-folk-rock combination, and is not nearly as critical and cynical with his take on America. Can you be more specific a...
What are we really trying to replicate?
I should try to clarify that I'm not saying that a system can sound "too good" in the sense that I don't think people should even want better system, just that at some point we're investing more into playing something than was put in to produce it...
What are we really trying to replicate?
I'm not trying to "replicate" anything. I strive to get my system to sound as natural and engaging to me as I possibly can, with the music I prefer to listen to in the room I listen in. Whether that replicates anything in particular, or whether or...
I have the DAC w/ the USB port, now what?
The most common choice for software to manage a music library is iTunes, but if you are a perfectionist about ripping your CD's to your hard drive, the iTunes error correction does not do as well as others. EAC (Exact Audio Copy) does a great job ...
SS or Tube Amp for Sawdust Environment?
Get yourself a Bosch Airsweep, which is tool-activated, self-cleaning and will help your system and your health if you can integrate it well into your shop workflow.
PREAMP suggestions
I can't speak to synergy with your VTL gear - and in that respect I'd bet other VTL gear might be a fine choice. I've recently been very impressed by Emmanuel Go's First Sound (current) offerings. Other than that, Modwright 36.5 is my own pre of c...
Ayre vs Bel Canto?
I would agree with Theo's advice. I've had both Bel Canto 1000's (original version) and the VX5e in my system and personally preferred the Ayre there. Music seemed to have more weight and substance as I recall, BUT I did NOT do a direct comparison...
Laurie Anderson "Homeland"
I was aware of the EP but have not been able to find a copy, or they've been very expensive.
