Ampzilla 2000 v2 and Mcintosh MC402
Just to add a bit more info. I built the original GAS Ampzilla from kit in 1975, after meeting Jim Bongiorno, Jon Dahlquist, and Saul Marantz at the Dahlquist room (driven by an Ampzilla) at an Audio show in DC. I also owned a GAS Ampzilla II… Fa...
Ampzilla 2000 v2 and Mcintosh MC402
Is this a trick question? Ampzilla!
Upgrade Internal DAC of Node or go with Atoll ST120.
@sfar  +1 I suggest a Schiit Dac.
We Can Make Classic Cars Outperform Today's "SuperCars": Why Not Vintage Audio?
I have two relevant examples of modding old gear to make it better.   1) My beloved Marantz Model 7. It dulled the leading edge too much, I thought as a 19 year old. What to do? Saul Marantz very kindly sent me suggestions, notes on a copy of th...
We Can Make Classic Cars Outperform Today's "SuperCars": Why Not Vintage Audio?
Today’s super cars smoke the super cars of yesteryear. One has to look at overall performance, such as laps on a track, to compare. Even going in a straight line, today’s cars are faster. As for what can be accomplished by modding, the times at an...
Warming up digital in my setup
+1 for Yggdrasil!
Is this a audioquest cable counterfeit fake?
I once bought a fancy”Audioquest” hdmi cable on eBay at about 10% of retail as an experiment. Was it fake? You bet! Did it work? Yes, but a real Audioquest cable that I had (a supposedly cheaper model) had much more vivid picture.   ebay has tur...
Recommendation on speakers for listening to live music
I listen to Phish and the Dead live recordings extensively. I use sealed box speakers- ATC, and it sounds GREAT. Just have enough oomph behind the speakers- say 200 watts per channel to power my SCM35’s (and SCM40 v.2, which I buy tomorrow). Don’t...
Tekton haters and bashers you just got a new target!
I owned Dahlquist DQ10’s for 24 years and never found them ugly. The stands, yes, but the speakers themselves with the solid walnut side pieces, no.
Time to upgrade the pre-amp.
I’ve had an ARC SP6B since 1981, and most of the repairs needed on it were for cold or cracked solder joints. Nothing serious. I imagine the same would be true for an SP10 or 11. But my preamp has needed repairs once every 5 years or so since 2000.
Can anyone tell me where the progress in audio went?
Vu has very specific ideas. His equipment is lovingly built and modified and has superb dynamics. I have had him get mad at me, perhaps not undeservedly, for pointing out shortcomings that my ears told me. They sound like horns, with a reduced but...
Best "Budget" / "bang for my buck" 2-channel amp and speakers can I get new?
+1 on Schiit gear. For speakers, you better trust your own ears. I am running ATC SCM7’s in my bedroom system and I could live with these a long time as my primary speakers. Try it listen to the Magnepans too.
MoFi controversy
This is old news, records have been cut from digital recordings primarily for 3 decades. But these records still sound like “vinyl.” Perhaps there are distortion characteristics built in to record playback that are pleasing, and that has been the ...
Speaker positioning and center image depth
One reason that I like acoustic suspension speakers rather than those with ports is that the interaction with the room is much easier to manage. A port makes the speaker placement more critical to achieve good imaging.
Noisy Right Channel
I had the same problem after I modified a Marantz Model 7 preamp (following personal guidance from Saul Marantz himself!) and had soft hiss and crackling in the right channel. Turned out I installed a defective coupling Mylar capacitor (Mylar beca...
