Power Amps and Power Conditioners, Do you plug in?
The thing to remember is if 1/2 of your system is plugged into a power conditioner, and there is a component plugged directly into the wall -- you are not protected from lightening on any of the components. You also have no warranty from the prote...
Recommendation for amp & pre combo +- 3,000?
Audio Research LS-15, 16, 22 (~1400 used) and VT100 (~$1600 used)original version. Will be a really nice combination for the $$.
Avalon - Symbol speakers, who has heard them?
Thumbs up -- go for it. Avalons not only look beautiful, they sound great. The Symbol is a real bargain, especially if you gan get demos that are in good shape. The other advantage to the demo pair is they are already broken in, since break-in on ...
I'm Freaked Out by this Tube comparison
ARC provides a select group of 6922s that are tested for the specs to match the amp and for low noise and microphonics. I have heard a big difference in 6922s, based on where they come from.I decided not to use ARC 6922s once in my VT-100. Never a...
Brightness Differences Between Daytime and Evening
The other costly alternative is to get a Burmester line conditioner. It goes for about $6K, but it is their most sought after product (over their other gear). I was blown away when I borrowed one for a weekend... I also live in an area with pretty...
Matching tubes on the Audio Research VT 100 mk II
In response to your question: The pairs of tubes in a VT-100 sit next to each other. I am not sure of the "V" numbers, but the easy way to remember is:When you look at the amp from the faceplate,Left front 2 output (larger, on the top) tubes are a...
TV Antenna and Satellite on one coax cable
Yep - thank God for diplexers....
Electrical current polarity
The only issue I have ever run across is transformer hum in some audio systems. The easy work around is to find the breakers in a panel an move them around so that your audio is on the same phase. If there is no problem, it may be desireable to ha...
Plasma Screens vs. Sony Grand Wega tri-LCD?
I agree the Sony Grand Wega looks bad. I am not sure of the reliability of LCD projector bulbs, but $1 / hr to watch TV (for just the cost of the bulbs) seems rediculous. Usually The other thing is to watch the Tweeter sales people. They are usual...
TV Antenna and Satellite on one coax cable
The guys above have good suggestions and the advise is the safest / cleanest way to go. What I have done is run my cable (lifeline service) directly to the TVs in the house. My rooftop antenna is split and run to the tuner and the HDTV STB / Satel...
tough sounds to reproduce ???
May not be what you are looking for, but one of my recordings has footage from a swamp, and it appears to quantify the noise floor in a system. On another recording, there is a person in a row boat which really highlights the ability to sound stage.
Electrical current polarity
The above posts are true.... The issue in residential wiring is the fact that your breaker box splits 230VAC. You can end up with an 180 degree out of phase condition if the electrician has wired outlets in the same room with breakers next to each...
PlayStation2 as budget DVD source: why/why not?
I think You will want to buy the PS2 remote control to use the PS2 as your DVD. The PS2 joysticks & ladder menus are too cluncky in my opinion, unless you are going to start every DVD, and watch until it ends. Other than that, I haven't really...
Anyone using AQ EVEREST, AMAZON cables
I am using AQ KE-4 and Diamond Extreme, which are supposed to be very similar metals to Everest and Amazon.. They are very fast and detailed. I had some of the Nordost SPM reference, and whatever their megabuck cable is (valhalla?) and they were a...
Anyone heard of this ? Possible "scam" ?
Had the same thing happen to me with the delivery of my HDTV from a reputable dealer, the difference was they hooked it up... The funny thing is: this is my 2nd TV in 30 days.... The first one came, the guys hooked it up, fired it up. adjusted con...
