Jsman, I see, that is certainly a good idea, also considering that the electronics is very old. I would guess, that your line level preamp is tube as well.

There is Ampex ATR-700 on ebay for $6.5k. They say in like new condition. Anyone wants to give it a try? I would but money is tight these days. Would really be interesting to compare it to the Studers.

Jsman, could describe your Studer and Otari modifications and your rationale for that? Do you think there are better sounding 1/4" decks than Studers?

Ghosthouse, no I have never heard of them.Well, it appears that my taste is mostly quite different, with some exceptions. 
MBL omnidirectional speakers. How do they sound ?
Of course, tape rules.So..they are for large rooms and require $100k amplification, bass integration can be questionable, imaging unusual.. Properly set-up can be considered by some among the very best.. Interesting speakers indeed.

No problem. Personally, I prefer higher level modern Canali and vintage Dior and YSL. As great as Kiton and Brioni are, they just don’t quite fit.
