The Allure of Vintage Audio Gear
"Vintage" is where the fun is, for me. Much of it holds its value, so experimentation doesn't break the bank. This helps me up the learning curve- yes, an Eico HF81 has great midrange, but at the cost of flabby bass. A Precision Fidelity C7A pream...
How cheap can you go and still be happy with the sound?
Love this prompt- I feel like an aardvark here. Instead of having one system I try to perfect, throwing all my resources at it, I have several that explore different approaches based on where I live, work, and what mood I'm in. I don't like buying...
Those rare albums that are great on first listen.
Anything by Bill Evans David Crosby- If I Could Only Remember My Name Talk Talk- Laughing Stock Fleetwood Mack- Tusk Beck- Morning Phase Arthur Russell- World of Echo Leonard Cohen- You Want it Darker Phillip Glass- The Photographer Henry ...
Herron VTPH2 new in system
Thanks so much for your thoughtful replies. I experimented- again!- with adding a decent Velodyne sub I have laying around into the equation, to check what my reference LP's might sound like with reasonable bass levels back in the system. Yes, tha...
Lowest priced MC thats better than a Premium MM?
lewm is on target here. I enjoyed my Zu Denon as my first MC until I switched to a retipped Phasemation and discovered the limitations of a spherical stylus, and in the process the quality of everything else downstream. I have the Hana in a differ...
What to ask when buying used speakers?
I'm lucky living in Southern California, where there's a huge range of used audio within an hour's drive. While I hate gambling in general and never go to Vegas, I really enjoy the process of taking a risk and meeting a seller at their house for a...
Bose 901 Series V Questions
I have a pair of 901 IV's in a secondary system in my screen porch (the rears pointed at solid walls). I bought them cheap as the equalizer had been lost. The only music that sounded good on them was dub. I tried Nick Drake- terrible is too kind a...
Was 1971 the high point of popular music?
Ignore the relativists- the list is correct, if incomplete. I’m not a boomer- history will confirm 1971 as the peak year in cultural history, warts and all! PS 1973 comes close- I buy albums from then blind and am usually amazed at their great so...
Rogue Audio. Reliability issues? Anyone?
I’ve had an Atlas for years- never a problem. A bad output tube can cause a resistor to blow in any tube amp. Ive had problems with Sovtek EL84’s in other amps.
What's the best EL84 amp?
Haven’t yet. I just got a 45 SET for them, replacing the Eico, and am swapping out different phono preamps to see how that sounds. The Eico at 14 watts was plenty powerful- it’s a fairly small 250 square foot space, with no carpet. Gets loud real ...
What's the best EL84 amp?
Sorry for the duplicate reply just now. I also opted for a Rogue Atlas (with KT120’s) for my quads and nothing else I’ve tried has worked out so well.  The best match for any EL84 amp in my direct experience is my Altec 604’s in 620 cabinets.
What's the best EL84 amp?
Sorry- these are both integrateds! My only experience with EL84 monoblocks is with Heathkit UA-1’s. They get lots of good press, especially with ESL57’s. My experience was they need very efficient speakers to be OK. Despite Sheldon Stokes’ claims,...

What's the best EL84 amp?
I’ve had experience with two EL84 amps, both of which I’ve kept in the mix over the years. Vintage: Eico HF-81. Great midrange, hard to fault, except for low damping factor. My more powerful Anthem Integrated 1, with a quad of el84’s, has proved a...
Help. System sounds thin and bright or harsh
Following this thread with interest, as I've had this issue crop up over the years across different systems. The last comment above rings true. I'm dealing with fewer variables in some ways, as the cost of my gear hasn't justified investing in hi...
