Kharma Midi vs. Sonus Faber Stradivari Amati
Fmpnd is right about the Kharma's diamond tweeter. It's not really strident per se, but it definitely needs the right amplification. In his system, it sounded extremely good, but I've heard it other systems--particularly with solid-state amplifica...
Kharma Midi vs. Sonus Faber Stradivari Amati
I think Greg hit the nail on the head. I've heard both (I owned the Midi Equisites), and I thought the Stradivari was more musically engaging. The Kharma, IMO, is much more hifi-ish in its presentation. It's more extended on top, and the bass is a...
Lived up to or beyond the hype for 2005.
It's also been a good, albeit VERY expensive, year for me.1. Von Schweikert VR-9s2. Jena Labs Dreamdancer speaker cables & Fundamental One PCs3. Walker Reference Hi-Def Links4. Rowland Concerto integrated5. Arcam DV-29 DVD/CD player6. ASC pane...
does anyone use vibration products with emmlabs?
I use Silent Running Audio platforms exclusively throughout my system, including under my CDSD. I've tried a lot of isolation devices, including the Aurios PROs, and the SRA platforms have provided a level of isolation I only could've dreamed of. ...
Denon 3910 vibrations during DVD loading...
If you're looking to have the 3910 modded, seriously check out Alex Pechev's mods. I THINK his URL is www.aplhifi.com. His mods do wonders for the unit, though they aren't cheap.
Review ... Neil Diamond's "12 Songs"
I posted a brief review of it over on Audio Asylum. I agree with your sentiments. "12 Songs" is perhaps the best album Neil has ever cut. The melodies are fantastic, the instrumental work (by Heartbreakers Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell, among ot...
Does your music sound better in a dark room?
I'm not sure it's better in an emperical sense, but for me, it IS more enjoyable listening in the dark. Maybe that increased level of enjoyment causes your brain to equate it with better sound. Who knows? Interesting question, though.
How do you listen your system? Front, mid or back
I prefer nearfield. I've tried farfield in my room, but it doesn't work nearly as well. The biggest advantage of nearfield, IMO, is that it takes a lot of the room and ceiling height (if you have a low ceiling) out of the equation--which is good f...
best CD player for you:Reimyo,P8i,AA,Esoteric x01.
Steve:The strange thing is that I DID audition the Reimyo with the Studio Master cord. I used other cords, including the Shunyata Anaconda Vx, and the Studio Master clearly worked best. Still, it didn't change my overall opinion of the player. Tha...
Great Copper Cables?
Second the Jena Labs. They're the best cables, period, I've ever heard--copper, silver, palladium, whatever. The upper models are not cheap, but if you've got the system, they're more than worth the price of admission.
best CD player for you:Reimyo,P8i,AA,Esoteric x01.
I've never found the EMM combo cool or clinical. Are you using the CDSD? Also, what cables are you using? They can make a huge difference in the tonal character of the sound. I auditioned the Reimyo, and while it's an excellent player, I found it ...
Red Trumpet still in business?
I know Rick from way back, during his Quality Vinyl days in Virginia. He is an AWESOME guy--I'm proud to call him a good friend--and his presence on the Web will be sorely missed. My wallet may be happier, but I'm not. Red Trumpet was the site I a...
What other hobby or hobbies do you have?
Music and high-end audio occupy most of my non-work time, but I love reading all kinds of books, playing football, and watching sports on TV. Marine biology is a particular passion of mine.
Shunyata Hydra-vs-Balanced Power Tech Ultra
Haven't tried the BPT, but I've owned the original Hydra and the Hydra-8. The 8 is a fantastic piece. It cleans up the sound to an extraordinary degree without compressing dynamics, like a lot of transformer-based units seem to do, or sacrificing ...
Recommendations to "Professional" Reviewers?
One of my pet peeves is when a reviewer states that one format is clearly superior to another. Then we find out, for example, that he/she is using a 15k analog rig and a 1.5k CD player. That kind of one-sided comparison leads to a lot of misinform...
