What must I correct to get the perfect sound? I don't think you are really looking for perfect sound. What you are asking for is decent bass, which is a reasonable goal. I looked at your plans, and it's a little hard to tell much. But you said there aren't a lot of soft srufaces in the room. ...
joule electra vs. atma-sphere any input? I own a pair of Atma-Sphere MA-1s, and they are the best amps I have had in my system. Very clear and uncolored. They do not sound tubey in the sense of adding any euphonic colorations. I have heard the Joule amps only at CES, in a system with Van...
What were your own blind cable test results? A while ago, I had a system of Sony 707ES, Classe CP35, Pass Labs Aleph 3, Spica Angelus, and Radio Shack 14 Ga wire. I brought some MIT Terminator 3 (I think) home, and htought it sounded much better. Not willing to believe it (why should speaker...
vpi hw19-III paint job? I was considering the exact same thing. I have an oak HW-19 (so 80's - eeeeew! :-P ) and was considering painting it gloss black, perhaps with black flakes in a clearcoat. The gloss black would probably be OK, but I'm sure the flake would kill res...
type of house wire One thing I always wondered, what if you were to forgo outlets and power cords entirely, and just run the cable out a hole in your wall, into your component, and splice directly to transformer/ fuse/ whatever is next in line in your gear? There wo...
Putting MM cart through MC phono stage Noisier at 1-2 o'clock because everyone logs onto their computers (generating much EMI/RFI on the national power grid) after lunch to see what's new on Audiogon!!!(Yeah, I know, I know...)
Interconnect - Does short length hinder sound? Intuitively, I'd say that's ridiculous, as the more cable length there is, the more capaciotance, inductance and resistance there is, along with all the other magical things that no one understands in cables. This is gennerally accepted to be true...
Will leaving an amp powered-up all the time... One dealer who sold Pass Aleph amps told me he left them on continuously, unless the shop was going to be closed for several days. He said they sounded much better that way. I would be worried about component life, and electric bills, though.
VPI Motor / Changing Capacitor is there a right It sounds like there is something hitting soemthing else that turns. Does it click 33.333 times per minute? I would look for something that you might have touched / bent while changing the capacitor. Perhaps a lead that got pushed out of place? Di...
What is the best SS Amp and Pre given the trends? Although I haven't tried them in my system, Audiopax should also be at the top of the list. Their room was one of hte best sounding at the last 2 CESs, and last year they were demonstrating new solid state amps.
What is the best SS Amp and Pre given the trends? The Pass Aleph 30 is the second best amplifier I have heard in my system, beaten only by latest AtmaSphere MA-1s with Caddock resistor upgrade. I did try a small Linn amp in my system (2120? Can't remember, but had a switching power supply), and w...
Top ten tube amps Audiojoy - I agree. Have you ever noticed the same effect with cheap boom boxes? Not the big ones that boast of Mega Bass, but the simple little ones. I've thought they have great speed / transient response on things like picked guitars and drums....
Top ten tube amps Audiojoy - You are right about the high end missing the point about musicality. I came to this conclusion at last year's CES/THE show, where the vast majority of systems, regardless of price, had an excess of upper midrange energy and a lack of mi...
Top ten tube amps Swampwalker, you beat me to it. I second the anything AtmaSphere nomination
HELP Digital bad, vinyl good??? Line stage almost never provides voltage gain; under most circumstances, attenuates signal. The voltage coming out of a linestage source component, if plugged dirtectly inot your amp, would be terribly loud, and therefore needs to be attenuated. I... |
