McIntosh -- good for show, not for sound, says dealer
Why is this thread still going?  Moderators should close it as nothing more constructive will come from this.  Is ^this^ the audio equivalent of cancel culture? ~Holmz (He/Mate/Bloke/Him)
What makes the biggest difference in sound quality?
System matching is the most important aspect of great sound. Having a system of equals works in harmony with everything else. Pairing a expensive pr of speakers with less than electronics results in frustrations and miss guided assumptions that s...
Dunlavy SC IV Speaker- Any Good???
I would take to heart the warning others have made about the likely age of the SC-IVs. Over time, certain mechanical and electrical aspects of a speaker can degrade, making their perfect repair a real nightmare. Is there any evidence that that ...
audible illusions vs supratek, vs holoaudio vs backert
I have had a AI linestage (Modulus) since the last millenium. I got some new tubes for it, but mostly just to try them… it sounds just dandy as it is, but the tubes are almost 1/4 century old. It is an inverting preamp, so at some point one needs...
Twisting 4 pairs of Belden 9497 per channel?
I am not a cable snob, so I mainly like hard specs over flowery words. The 4TC and 8TC are available as bulk to add your favourite ends to. That is what I will do. Mostly because it is easier to lock them into the bananas on the speakers. But all...
Twisting 4 pairs of Belden 9497 per channel?
Does twisting or not twisting alter sound character of the music> Yeah it lowers the inductance, and provides less magnetically induced current and coupling.   I would be looking at either: A Kimber 4TC or 8TC as they are already woven....
Are you pairing Tube Preamp/Line Stage with Class D Power Amp?
Not yet, but I have a couple of class-D, so it is on the list of things to do.
Wilson Sabrina (not X), Sonus Faber Nova 2, or Vandersteen Treo CT
@holmz , The Treo was a significant upgrade from the 3a Sigs I owned before them. Overall, a more refined sound. Though I do agree with getting a sub or two. His Mac 152 should have plenty of oomph to drive a pair of Treo’s, as well as jus...
My budget system and a speaker question
Post it here if you want it answered. (People, like me, are not going to clock on links just because you are too lazy to cut and paste it.)
Integrated tube amp vs Tube amp?
There are 2 schools of thought on preamps:  Preamp should "add to sound quality" and "preamp should be invisible".   Integrated tube amps usually are looking for the 2nd path to success.  So if you're in that school of thought, integrated tube...
Mixing Ethernet Cables
Holmz and btscott are correct. Just use the copper Cat5 and you’ll be more than fine. If one is starting from scratch then a cat8 makes sense, especially if they are moving a lot of data and doing video editing or some other thing. (CAT 9 soun...
Integrated tube amp vs Tube amp?
I am using McIntosh 302 amp now. I wanted to experience “tube” sound and was thinking of trying “horn” sound also by getting a pair of Klipsch Cornwall 4 s. Currently have Goldenear Triton 1s and Ohm 5 Mk2s. I suppose you can choose speakers ba...
Thinking of taking the plunge.
iPad running Spotify 1/8” to RCA connector. A bit more than $1, but it will get things going.
Speaker static/hiss?
… try the ground lift switch. Give it 5 mins to let it settle. Hiss is not solved with a ground. You need to Use a lower noise amp, or Avoid being on all fours with the ear up to the speaker. I would choose #2.
Integrated tube amp vs Tube amp?
Usually the amp is powering speakers, and the speaker impedance comes into play at some point. If they are super sensitive, then don’t bother with the amp… IMO. What is the sensitivity and impedance profile (or rated and minimum ohms)? That will ...
