Low-sensitivity speakers — What's special about them?
I started this thread early in my system building. Jim Salk's lower priced smaller speakers provide the bass extension needed -- and you're right, Ralph -- it's not "special" in any real way, unless one is comparing what Jim is able to accomplish ...
Advice for upgrading my system
OP, I’m in Denver, too. My suggestion, being local, would be to try some speakers at Crescendo Audio, at Gold Sound, at Listen Up. Free to listen. Other dealers in the area include places up in Fort Collins and up toward Boulder. The Colorado Audi...
How long can preamp tubes last?
I would definitely try rolling the tubes in the Freya. Lots of good options for varieties of sound. Consider emailing Jim McShane about tubes, or Brent Jessee. Both are reliable dealers, they know their stuff, and don't try to up-sell. Tubes can b...
Speaker placement
+1 on MillerCarbons advice. The only way I would differ is that I was able to accomplish quite a lot with treatments after experimenting with placement and doing some measurements with REW software (free). At this point, expensive podiums might he...
Low-sensitivity speakers — What's special about them?
@lonemountain Your answer is so simple and logical. I suppose if some of the good stand mount speakers out there didn't try to do it all, they would be easier to drive and more easy to match with a variety of amps. It would be hard, though, for a ...
New set up in asymmetrical room - speaker placement etc
OP, very interesting set of parameters. I strongly recommend getting a uMik and downloading REW. The time spent learning the basics of how to measure your room will repay you many-fold.
Free in-home testing?
@mlenow Focal 936And I erred -- it was Martin Logan xti 60's that I got from Crutchfield.@edlchiang Crutchfield charges 75 dollars to return SOME pairs of speakers. For large ones, like the Martin Logans, it was $10/speaker because it was going ba...
Need definitions of: Dark; Warm; and Bright
@mammothguy54 Thanks for the nice words! As for "chocolate mid-range" and "butterscotch highs" -- I have no problem with that. There are words my family and I make up to describe various experiences -- and they are very, very precise because we mak...
Free in-home testing?
The Music Room allows a couple weeks of trial. Buyer pays shipping.I tried a very large set of speakers from Focal via Crutchfield. 60 day trial and $10 each speaker to ship back to them.
Speaker Recommendation
@proto55 Apologies. They still carry the 40i model, but it's $1082 each at scratch and dent. Very well reviewed. I've heard and really like the 60xti version and it plays well with lower watt amps.I suspect the ML's speed would lend itself nicely ...
any suggestions on what to replace Bluesound Node 2i with
@coltrane1 You’ve got your priorities mixed up. Turn to vinyl for real music. IMHO.It's advice like this that makes people run from the internet, screaming. And "IMHO" -- LOL. Not humble at all.
any suggestions on what to replace Bluesound Node 2i with
@elsfan Thanks. It's not clear to me, as @jjss49 pointed out, whether a power supply upgrade helps very much is one is *already* bypassing the Node's DAC. Indeed, I would bet it is not worth it.

Steve Khan has a nice tribute up: http://www.stevekhan.com/tributes.htm
What are the current useless terms in this "audio world"
"Musical" is no longer carrying much meaning for me.
Speaker Recommendation
This is worth considering. In stock. On sale, free shipping, 60 days to try. $75 to return.Compared to other suggestions, this is very low risk to try.https://www.crutchfield.com/S-gID8UliYcdE/p_839MO40GB/MartinLogan-Motion-40-Gloss-Black.htmlOthe...
