which book to get?
Listen instead of read; try Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Glen Miller; Thelonius Monk, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Miles. Listen to anything Rudy Van Gelder produced as he was a master at getting the sound right. Don't forget Horace Silver, L...
Used turntable & arm combo for under $2500.0
Well Tempered arms and tables are superb and sell used for the price you are considering. VPI Scouts get fine reviews and might be found in that price range.
Any thoughts on the CD "trimmer"
The process works! Find someone who has one; listen to your CD untreated and then then his that has been trimmed. It is an amazing tweak. Forget the marker; it isn't needed. After cutting your collection cryogenically treat them which is the next ...
Loudspeakers that go LOUD?
Switch to a solid state amp and try a pair of VMPS RM40's that can be had for around $3k used. VMPS are very efficient and have a huge sound stage and window rattling bass. I love my Zu Definitions; they get very loud and your 40 watts of tube pow...
what amps mate well with Zu Definition
I use the VAC Phi 2.0 and the VAC Phi 220 monoblocks (way more power than I need, but don't want to sell them) on my Definitions and the noise floor is very low and sound extremely musical and inviting. I haven't enjoyed my music this much in year...
OK...ONE LAST SPEAKER QUESTION cash cash
I haven't returned my Definitions nor do I plan to. I will probably go to the Pro version down the road. Great speaker; very musically satifying.
Best sounding Saint-Saens Sym No. 3?
Mine is the San Franciso with DeWaart also; it has a lively pace and the organ is spectacular.
Zu speaker owners - do you have any gain issues?
No, you won't have any gain problems. I am running the VAC Phi 220 monoblock amps into my Definitions; 220 watts per side of tube power and they sound fantastic; I couldn't be happier with the sound. At lower volumes the speaker still sounds fanta...
What hapened to VAC Phi 2.0 preamp
Feniks, yes, I think you could still order the Phi in the configuration it is, but it takes a while to build. Having said that, the wait is worth it. I couldn't be happier with all the VAC equipment I own now. It is the most musical I have ever ow...
What hapened to VAC Phi 2.0 preamp
The Phi 2.0 is still in production, but Kevin mentioned the machining the chasis of this product is labor intensive and has caused him to consider changing the chasis but not the circuitry. It is an absolutely beatiful piece of equipment. When I o...
Favorite Non-Major Record Label
Reference Recordings; MA recordings; Propius; Red House "Nod to Bob" is a superbe HDCD recording. Is Telarc still is business?
Review: Valve Amplification Company Phi 300 Tube amp
Sam, I have the Phi 220 monoblocks with 220 watts a side and they handled my Wilson MAXX extremely well for a tube amp. Recently, I bought the Zu Definitions and considered selling the 220's as I don't need as much power now. Kevin told me the 160...
About the new Wilson Audio Watt/Puppy 8
I agree; there is no way the Zu Definition are in the same league as the Wilson Alexandria. I was merely pointing out that an owner of the Alexandria felt they were. I am not attempting to slam Dave or any of his products; I was a very happy owner...
About the new Wilson Audio Watt/Puppy 8
Already read it and it is one man's opinion. You know from experience that a show setting never shows off a speaker's true worth because of the lousy rooms and set ups. Remember the Wilson Watt/Puppy 7's at CES in 2005. They sounded like $500 spea...
Review: Valve Amplification Company Phi 300 Tube amp
You have penned an excellent, well thought-out, descriptive review that hopefully will bring many more buyers to the wonderful world of VAC equipment. My prayer for Kevin Hayes is audiophiles will purchase this amp solely based on your review. Gre...
