5AR4 rectifier tube question
The first valve I changed on my SLP-05 was the rectifier. I started with stock tubes and finished with Blackburn. Day 1 and 2. I left the rest. They were matched very well. Did it make a difference? I was going to sell the unit if I couldn’t cont...
Dipole speakers, subwoofers and that rear wall
Oh, you mean "cabinet." That’s what most people call the box that holds speaker drivers.   What I mean is the mids and highs are in separate enclosures in the front and rear. They have NO common space between front and back mids and or highs. Us...
Dipole speakers, subwoofers and that rear wall
What is a "tuned chamber?" I've never heard of this room treatment. Instead of dipole, use both front and rear baffles and both are enclosed within the cabinet design. RM50 VMPS. There are a few more now. The old QLS Infinity.  NOT the RS OB desi...
Dipole speakers, subwoofers and that rear wall
I "Embrace it" in a tuned chamber vs trying to tune the WHOLE room to the open driver. It can sound wonderful, but NEVER accurate. I've had to Endure dipoles more than Embrace them.. I had IRS Betas for 20 years. Wonderful speakers for the money. ...
A slant on RFI
I'll dig out my aluminum foil supplies and get to work.. First thing to cover, an aluminum hat and underwear. The sound gear will have to wait. I have my priorities.
Thermal Distortion your loudspeaker most likely suffers from it. But do you care?
There is a point (temperature wise) where equipment sounds the best. Most audiophilers don't overheat voice coils in their units. That is a problem KIDS have in sound competition. I have never had a problem with overheating parts. For me it's audi...
I am so happy.....
You did something 90% of audiophiles can't do. Be happy with what they have. Most are a bunch of nutters looking for another change, when what they have is 99% better than most who even have a sound system. :-) Good for you. I have to take a mood...
Dipole speakers, subwoofers and that rear wall
It’s a timing issue, the front wave vs the back. The front wave hits the seated position, when the back wave is hitting the front wall. No matter where you put the front baffle, the rear of baffle has to travel further. Longer rooms help. Our user...
Dog Owners, Do Subwoofers And Loud Noises From Your Home Theater Bother Your Dog?
No DOG for 6 years? I’d be insane. I’m a dog person, so are ALL of my friends. No DOG no friend.. If my dog doesn’t like you. I know, I don’t. My dog leaves the room if it gets to loud. They (a dog) may show signs of being gun shy. I've been sens...
Has the cost of HiFi gotten a bit too much?
Mine are off the floor, the carpet isn't wool though. How do you clean your floor if the cables are just laying there? I'm guessing not to often. The only sure conspiracy, "dirty cables". It's only a conspiracy if the cable fairy cleans your cable...
Do larger planar speakers produce more accurate sound?
I sure like Quads, I went from Quads to small planars 25 years ago. I was a big fan of Infinity's IRS Beta. I had them for 20 years or so. A guy that logs on AG fixed them for me. He is a VMPS guy, so I tried them. WOW for the money. Small planars...
Corrosion
Black and or Green. "Both colors are caused by oxidation as the copper reacts to elements in the environment. The green oxidation is commonly seen when pool chlorine is stored in the same room with electrical equipment and minimal ventilation, pr...
Macintosh pre amps
The "output" are the sub connection also. You can use both A, B and the RCA center is fixed. You cannot use both XLR and RCA outputs. The signal will drop off the RCA side vs XLR when the demand is low. That has been my experience with Mcintosh on...
I miss my Loudness Button and Tone Controls....
I use the Helmholtz tuning method also. Tune the room, the electrical grid and then minor adjustment if at all with tone control. It is usually because of a source issue. Minor tweaks between sources is not uncommon. I use Streaming, CDs, SACD, T...
MC901 monoblock tube matching Q
The power tubes are in quads and the signal tubes are in pairs. You can just throw one in, it will work. How it will sound is a different story. I'd guess just fine.. How picky are you. 10 years from now, start looking..
