Bought powerful/expensive Amp+Speakers but plan to use an old preamp , am I crazy?
Listen, after you swap in the new gear, continue to listen to the NAD.  If you still love it, keep it.  If not, well, there is your next upgrade.  Don't get caught up in the "I have to upgrade completely game."  I have an old Audionics BT2 preamp ...
Suggest your most desired MSRP $1,500-$3,000 Stand Mount for a Shootout.
Get a pair of the older KLH 5's in good condition.  They use a different midrange configuration and despite audiophile angst about cross-firing mids, the image very well and very precisely.  Would make an interesting comparison, and with some care...
Modern "Vintage" Sounding Preamps
Since you have phono as well as line input needs, consider a good used Audio Research SP6B preamp, or the all-tube (include regulation) SP8.  The phono input on this line of Preamps was as good sounding or better than almost any other preamp of it...

elliotbnewcomb - AR-2Ax, my first decent speakers while in college. Got em with wedding gift money. Anyone remember the AR sound booth at Grand Central Station, NYC? Sam Goodys? I was just of of B-School and working in White Plains, NY at the tim...

Thumbs up on the Heil AMT-1's.  I owned four of them .... used them in a quad system in the mid-70's and then sold/gave them to musician friends of mine (classical) .... one of them uses a pair of them today powered by a Citation 11 preamp and an ...

Vintage50 - I will second the info Tom Thiel gave you.  I have two sets of pointed spikes, one set from the 3.5 and another from a 2 2.  Both these spiked sets are 2" long and 1/4" in diameter.  So apparently Thiel was using "standard" spikes for ...

Tony -Don't be so self-effacing.  The fact is that much of what gets ascribed to gear in our hobby is really the result of other things.  I think until you read or take a course in microphones and recording, room treatment, and psychological decep...

Anybody here have an extra CS 3.5 midrange driver (or speaker itself) hanging around, orphaned.  If so, please contact me at hlavo@yahoo.com and we can talk about relieving you of same.  Thanks.
Do you all agree when Prince said the 60s, 70s and 80s were the golden ages of music?
Yes.
Who is ditching their shiny disc spinners?
If you no longer need your cd's and plan to buy no more, sell the Oppo and invest in the best dac/streamer you can find.  However the Oppo is a respectable and reliable CD/SACD/DVD-Audio/DVD-video) player and might be worth keeping it.  Currently ...
AUDIO RESEARCH VS VTL
I've had experience with both companies.  Had a 6B preamp / 90B amp setup for years.  Switched to VTL 85.  Sold the 6B.  Bought new modified 6A, bought new 85, bought older ST-150.  Love both.  Think ARC excels at preamps, expecially phono stages ...
Why have capacitors improved so much over the years?
From the early eighties until the early nineties the transparency of audiophile-quality gear improved enormously.  This is almost certainly the improvement in passive part quality (mainly capacitors, but also to a degree in resistors.)  My observa...
Great Recordings, Sonically Speaking - and Why.
As Wolfie says, look for early Audio Fidelity pressings.  One features Louis Armstrong and one of his last bands as well as Thelma Middleton, and the sound is spectacular.  Audio Fidelity also packaged this disk with one by the amateurish Dukes of...
Do You Ever Find Yourself Unable to Listen To Your System?
The subject has been covered pretty thoroughly above.  I'll simply tell you that yes ..... I have gone weeks without listening when family problems are at a peak.  Right now they are simmering, and my listening has suffered considerably, although ...
