How do I decide on a CD player or adding a dac?
I went the DAC route. I added a Bel Canto Dac2 to augment my Rotel 1072 CDP. Hmm... Frankly the change was underwhelming. Yeah, it was different, but not necessarily "better different". The 750 bucks the DAC2 cost me wasn't worth the differences I...
Who Do You Credit For Getting You Into This Hobby?
Another audiophile who credits his father. My dad got into hifi in the 50's with tube based gear, DeWald if I recall. He had an itegrated amp and tuner. He died when I was little, but left his system for me to use thru college. I'll never forget t...
Law of Diminishing Returns - CD/SACD Players
I think speakers make a much bigger differnce. In my experience, upgrading the player has only made very subtle improvements.I went from a Denon carosel player (300 bucks) to the Rotel 1072, then later I added a Bel Canto Dac2. The improvements we...
Musical Heaven, NOT Audio or Speaker heaven …
40 grand for a pair of speakers? Damn, they better be amazing.
CDP Upgrade
I installed Bel Canto DAC2 using a Blue Jeans Cable, which is a Belden coax cable with Canare RCA jacks. Hmm...The verdict. Better. But, not earth shattering. Subtle improvements in glare, smoothness, smearing and noise floor. Yeah, the difference...
High power integrated suggestions please.
Cford, I went from the Odyssey Stratos to the Krell 400xi. The Krell has it all over the Odyssey. IMO.
CDP Upgrade
I just picked up a Bel Canto DAC2, used, from here. I'll be getting it within a week or so, as it's coming from California.I've heard nothing but great things about the Bel Canto. I'll post my impressions when it arrives.I'm psyched!
CDP Upgrade
I haven't bought anything yet. I was listening to a McCormack universal player the other day that was intriguing. My dealer dropped the Cary line. I was hoping to hear the new models. I guess they were problematic from a business and customer supp...
Krell 400 XI
Kpw, what do you mean "optimising the power supply"? Did you mod your unit?BTW, I'm getting great bass response from my 400xi. I'm using full range floor stand speakers de-coupled from the floor.
Mixed Results from My Hifi
Tpsonic, not sure what you're referring to. "Digital EQ to EQ". What devices do you have in mind.To update a bit, I went to Spearitsound in Boston and listened to a handful of CDP's. A nice alternative I found was the McCormack UDP-1. I con't care...
Mixed Results from My Hifi
This is great, lots of responses. Thanks guys. A rash of divergent opinions. Marco is right, I'm screwed.Think I'll go to Spearitsound and tease 'em for awhile today. ;-)
Mixed Results from My Hifi
My speakers are pretty close to the walls, on hardwood floors. There is a rug and upholstered furniture in there. Well, yeah, it's my living room. ;-)I thought tubes might gloss over the sound a little and soften it. No? Tube Dac or Tubed CDP.
Krell 300 il or 400xi or ? What would you do ?
The 400 is fast, detailed and powerful. Precise, but a little cold. Taut, controlled bass. It's a Krell, you'd expect that. I've got one. Stereophile did a review several months ago. The only knock on the 400 is that the heat sinks are inadequate....
Classe vs Krell
Krell is know widely for it's taughtly controlled bass response. Wadia150 doesn't know what he's talking about. My lowly KAV400xi integrated has AMAZING bass.
High power integrated suggestions please.
If you like the NAD stuff, don't worry about its longevity. I've got a NAD3020 integrated amp that I bought in 1980 that I'm still using! NAD's were always denigrated for cheap build quality, but 25+ years of service is hard to complain about.
