how about USB cable? Yes, USB cable quality (and perhaps length) can affect sound quality. They are impedance controlled differential transmission lines and will experience the same issues you get on S/PDIF cables. Termination quality, connections, impedance match are...
Isolate Digital with Pi Filter? Use ac line filters. You know, power strips with extra filtering (more than just spike protection). One for each side of your system. Best if they both plugged into the same outlet. That prevents ground currents via different branches.jh
Wavelength Cosecant or TwinDAC+ or ??? There is also now the Chime USB tube DAC. Takes regular input too, volume control.www.hagtech.com/chime.htmljh
Best DAC under $2K Chime DAC has USB input, top notch converters, and tube output stage. All under $2k new with warranty.www.hagtech.com/chime.htmljh
Replacement for NE5532 opamp in preamplifier ? Sure, the NE5532 was a terrific design from an earlier era. Absolutely breakthrough. Today, you have plenty more choices. I like the OPA2134. Cheap and sound great. Sometimes the OPA2604 is even better. Both will be plug and play. Analog devices i...
grado reference statement hum Magnetic shielding is nothing like electric field shielding. In this case, it sounds liek magnetic. Aluminum foil will probably have no effect.jh
Lyra Dorian - Opinion? I played a Dorian at RMAF04 show. Tracking was awesome and sound was very detailed and clean. It wasn't loaded quite properly, but it didn't seem to mind. Noise floor was WAY down.Of course, it was on a $5000 arm and $7000 table...jh
Why does the Marantz 10B Tuner sound so amazing ??? There was a really good article on the 10B several years ago in Vacuum Tube Valley. Or was it Sound practices? Higly recommended reading. Dig it up.Aside from the exceptional tuning front-end and all-tube circuits, I think the big difference may h...
Sonic Frontiers Phono One: Gain too high? I don't believe the issue is gain, but rather overload. The 1.5mV cart would probably overdrive the inputs (or second stage) when set to high gain. If opamp-based circuit, will likely be hard clipping, which is pretty easy to hear. Once signal is ...
New $500 "best" phono stage? I believe Mr. Fremer meant that particular phono stage was the best he'd heard in a certain price range. He rarely compares machines across large financial boundaries. There is nothing wrong with your Plinius.jh
Balanced connection/amplification for phono? Yeah, you can receive the cart balanced using the tranny trick. As Eldartford mentions, you can also do it using a difference amp and matched resistors to a common mode voltage (such as ground). This, however results in a high common mode noise so...
Balanced connection/amplification for phono? I gotta agree that balanced connections are the way to go. Heck, that's why my top phono stage is done that way. It's beneficial in both interconnects and amplification. So many inherent benefits. The problem is that it costs so much, twice as man...
Balanced connection/amplification for phono? Great question. But phono signals are not balanced. They are floating. A balanced connection requires three signals, positive phase, negative phase, and reference (commonly ground). Cartridge coils have only two wires per channel. For balanced, th...
Seperate phono stage v.s. step up transformer Yeah, go with the TX103 from www.bentaudio.com. Buy the kit version and save. Best trannies on the market today. I use them with my Trumpet.jh
3K to 4K Phono Pre-Amp Romy,Thank you for your answer. It's a very bold statement that there are no good phono stages being made today. Same with turntables, arms, and magnetics. As a designer, I'd be happy to explain why our analog culture is screwed up and that produc... |
