what are you listening to lately?
Alright, I was at Costco during lunchtime today and they had The Chieftains "Further Down the Old Plank Road" for $12.99, so I picked it up. I've listened to the first three tracks and it's a mixed bag. The opening track with Nickel Creek is lackl...
what are you listening to lately?
Great thread, Pehare!I was actually thinking about creating a similar thread called "In Heavy Rotation". Isn't that what Michael Fremer terms his little monthly column in S'phile? It's interesting to know what everybody's listening to at any partic...
The absolute best and worst-sounding CD you own ?
Thank you Viridian. Why anyone would use this recording as a "reference" is beyond me.Quick Story: The first time I heard Cafe Blue was while purchasing a preamp from a fellow AudiogoN'r. He wanted to demo his system for me. As shrill as this cd c...
12" or so monitor stands
Marco beat me to it. The Lovan Jazz is a great looking speaker stand that fits your description. It should be available on Audio Advisor http://www.audioadvisor.com
The absolute best and worst-sounding CD you own ?
Best - Lyle Lovet "Joshua Judges Ruth" Maybe not the absolute best recording that I own, but when considered as a complete package, it's a phenomenal piece of work AND it sounds good! Unfortunately, a lot of the really great recordings are just pl...
Which artists do you just NOW get?
Before this thing gets completely derailed, I'll add one.Rather than a specific group, I never used to "get" a whole genre...Bluegrass.I never understood why people would like so many HORRIBLE elements all combined into one form of music. Let's se...
Martin Logan SL3 vs Ascents
Nicely stated Pmkalby. You beat me to it with your analogy re: Bose speakers and Britney Spears.I don't think that the designer ever has intentions to release an inferior product to its' predecessor. I DO, however, think that they are often pushed...
Can I nominate Sean please ?
Count me in as one who has not only learned a lot from Sean's prolific posting on this site, but have also been the recipient of some of his handy work.As you'll see in my "virtual system", I have a pair of cables that Sean made for me. They are h...
Bookshelf Speakers:500-900$CDN Advice for starter?
Even if you get a new receiver, I don't know that my recommendation would change. If you can, find a dealer who sells the NAD AND Arcam and ask to audition the speakers through each respective receiver.I haven't heard either one of the receivers th...
kef 104/2 or Thiel 2.3
You're all kidding, right?Mluthier - You don't mention the associated gear, so I can't say that I'd recommend them for your system...But the Thiel 2.3s are a MUCH better speaker.Am I missing something here?
Bookshelf Speakers:500-900$CDN Advice for starter?
For a music system in this price range, I'd recommend the Spica TC-60s that are being closed out on AudioAdvisor for $599.For a combo system, from what you have on your list and considering what you'll be using to drive them, I'd go with the Parad...
Looking for suggestions on reasonable upgrades
Agree with the above. I can also testify to the quality of Frank's cables. I have both the interconnects as well as the speaker cables. I've compared them to MUCH more expensive cables (MIT Terminator 2, Sonoran Desert Signature, etc.) and they si...
Traveling Wilburys? What gives?
Thanks for the info and my apologies for the delayed follow-up.Nickel Creek was AWESOME. I have to agree with the above regarding the level of talent. It's amazing how much Chris Thiele (sp?) carries the group. He is an incredible talent. To add t...
Bookshelf Speakers:500-900$CDN Advice for starter?
Let's see...$500-900 Canadian...That's like 50-60 bucks, right?

Mikkloyd,May I humbly suggest that the "weakest" link in your otherwise excellent system is the Outlaw. Get rid of that, or at least relegate it to use only for the surrounds (unless you really want to scrap the HT altogether) and get a decent two...
