What is your favorite material for loudspeakers?
Johnk, Sonus claims their cabinets are built like Cremonese string instruments of old. . . fabulously effective markcom. . . reality is different though. . custom ply cabinets of Sonus do not vibrate. . . they are desirably dead as doornails. But ...
SS or Tube Preamps with Dual-Balanced outputs
Looks like my Capri has only 1 single pair of XLR balanced outputs. Manual seems to confirm only 1 pair of balanced outputs. Strike Capri for this application. Criterion won't have these limitations. . . at a uhrn. . . charmingly different price p...

Johnk, the goals of cabinet construction for a string instrument and for a speaker are subtly different. . . a luthier uses the entire case of the instrument as a mechanically active amplifier. . . As such laminates like timber plies make for infe...

"great imaging and other desirable sonic attributes?"Zephir, that's an impressive list that you have put together. What makes things so deliciously complicated is that "one man's guerrilla is another man's freedom fighter". . . or in our terms, wh...
Audio Research Ref. 210 questions
Power chords will make a significant difference, tubes will make a difference, presumably feet will make a difference as well. . . but. . . until your equipment is fully broken in (at least 500 hours of real playing time) it will change sound quit...
New Amps for my Avalon Ascent II
Hi FranzSchubert, old Gustav does sound magnificent on my Mahlers with subwoofers firing outward + 312 + Capri. the extension is phenomenal. . . but it is not bloated at the bottom, nor it ever becomes tizzy at the top. . . and harmonic exposure i...
New Amps for my Avalon Ascent II
I am a lover of Rowland myself. . . I have migrated from my own venerable pair of JRDG model 7Ms to a single JRDG 312 stereo amp. My taste in music is 90% classical. Speakers are Vienna Mahlers. The 312 has all the incredible sweetness and grace o...

Higher end Sonus speakers are more/less all curves. .. hence the heavy use of custom plies. According to Sumiko, by using these custom plies Sonus achieves higher rigidity/damping with low mass. G.

Sonus is an interesting case. . . rather than constructing speakers with plywood, they layer selected veneers in place with crossing grains into a custom ply pre-molded to the shape of the speaker. I understand that the top models use over 20 laye...

Dave, ol' DK4z just loves the attention. . . the more we chase his red herrings, the more he'll get excited and spin them back to us with his peerless colloquial verve. . . . very entertaining really! G.

New Rowland Criterion 2-chassis battery pre
Audiofil, you have a point about buttons on JRDG. . . they are a little to small for me as well. . . in particular, the on/standby power switch on the 312 amp is a tiny round thing. . . flush with the front plate. . . I always hunt around with my ...

Audiofeil, price can't be helped, unless you belong to Our Holy Church Of Wishful Thinking, but if you are experiencing unsightly flopping of lower lip, that mildly upsetting problem can be easily corrected by simple surgical restiching procedure ...
New Rowland Criterion 2-chassis battery pre
Thank you Audiofil, except for the relative insensitivity to eye-candy, blindness is hardly a disability for an audiophile. . . more of a persistent annoyance, which can be circumvented to a reasonable extent by bits of added shrinkwrap on positiv...

Interesting. . . in most cases, Baltic Birch is not from the Baltic region. . . it usually denotes a somewhat hiher grade birch ply from Russia, Bielorus, or China. Finnish birch instead. . . is a different kettle of fish. One of the highest grade...
