UL certification and insurance
They do, it's just they are not readily visible. The UL certification is for the plug and connector, not the whole cord per se. Plugs have to meet basic UL standards (UL 498) for electrical devices. The cord manufacturers do not make the plug/conn...
wire for dedicated 20 amp circuit
Maybe Romex is not permitted where you live, and that's why he came up with it. Ask. Aluminum MC will better shield against power line noise from external magnetic/electric/radio fields. Probably the best off-the-shelf wiring you can buy for audio...
OTL amplifiers
OTL's are usually more expensive, have many tubes - expensive tubes (high current triodes), consume a lot of power, may not perform the same with different speakers, and may not even work with some speakers. Those are, in very general terms withou...
30 Amp Breaker Question
Branch wiring to to 120-volt lights and receptacles have to be on a 15 or 20-amp circuit breaker, but the wire can be any size greater than #12. That's the code - whether you choose to heed it or not is your business. General-purpose receptacles a...
DC offset level to avoid speakers damage-
The maximum dc offset tolerated by a speaker is a percentage of the linear excursion of the driver that is acceptable, usually 10 to 15%. The formula used is:Vdc(max) = % excursion x excursion x driver impedance/[Force Factor x Suspension Complian...
Passive parts: Do they make a difference ?
Sean: an interesting question begs to arise - give me a box full of the best passive devices, and, if I were to build an amplifier (a rank amateur, me) how would it sound next to an amp built by, say, Nelson Pass with Radio Shack rejects? I do not...
Is there an advantage to more tubes in an amp?
Tubes are also called "valves" for the reason they act like water valves. Think of the power supply as a water reservoir and the speakers water turbines. The more water that hits the turbine, the more the sound power. If you have only one valve, t...
dedicated amp outlet vs avs 2000
You could try a wiring/raceway system called "Wiremold" which is a wall mounted decorative raceway that runs flush with the base molding of walls. Even the outlet boxes are surface mounted. This avoids cutting behind and into walls and I've seen t...
UPS & Small Claims Court?
How do we know that you didn't remove the contents from the box and stomp all over it? See my point, that's what you'll have to show in small claims court...
need help with impedance on SF power 2
The tap is set for 8-ohms at the factory. I think you have to remove the rear panel to access the tap to change it to 4-ohms to match your speaker. From what I've heard, operating the SF Power 1,2 and 3 at 8-ohms with any speaker is not a problem ...
Advis for a pre with 600 ohms output ?
A 600 ohm preamp can drive practically any amp on the planet. Buy what you like based on what you can afford. The input impedance of a commercial power amp is a non-factor - no matter what the value - as far as "matching" is concerned.
Preamp is an amplifier too, right???
Preamps do not increase power, only voltage. A preamp drives a load of thousands of ohms, which is far larger than its own output impedance, and that, along with a smaller power supply, decreases the power produced and transferred. Instead, it inc...
What causes phase shifts...Sean?
Other than electrical elements which inherently cause phase shift (and enables passive x'overs to work), there are: room reflections and delays to waveforms introduced by A/D and D/A converters, microphone placement, wiring losses, RF/EMI, process...
Wire twisting polarity.
I don't think it matters - each successive twist has the opposite field polarity of the previous. And, no, the hemisphere has no effect. Coriolis "force" mainly affects air mass and water dynamics.
Sound of digital jitter and error correction?
Listen to the same recording on both vinyl and digital. Pay particular attention to cymbals as they fade away. You'll see the difference very quickly - the "hash" sound of the digital cymbal just before it fades to quiet is courtesy of jitter. Wit...
