Best sounding cd in your collection Side By Side, Itzak Pearlman and Ray Brown. Fabulous recording, although Itzak shouldn't quit his day job to play jazz.
Music that has good cymbals Try Thelonius Monk's Monk's Music. It's not the most exiting cymbal sound, but Art Blakey uses the high-hat to keep an amazingly rock steady 4/4 time while playing a completely a-rythmic solo around it. Great drumming.
Beating the RVG Horse Yes, I suppose "if it sounds better is it better" is a good way to think about it. Plus, I have pretty much concluded that my 120 watt Rotel amp doesn't generate enough current to really drive my Spendor S8s. It never seems like it has enough juic...
Rudy Van Gelder Remasters We were discussing this a few weeks ago. I'm no fan of the RVG productions - at least not on CD. A lot of them do sound thin and tinny. But if you listen to jazz you just can't live without them because the music was so amazing. I'm told that the ...
Pittsburgh / Western PA / Eastern OH I'm in Pittsburgh too. South Hills. Doesn't seem like there's enough people for a club, but it's worth a shot.
Looking for Jazz emsembles with a guitar flair Try Duke Ellington's "Duke's Big Four". It's a quartet date from 1973 on the Pablo label. It's Duke - piano, Ray Brown - bass, Louis Bellson - drums and Joe Pass on guitar. Very well played all the way around and really REALLY good recording.
Bill Evans Village Vanguard 3CD set On the other hand, you have to admit that the sounds quality is really lush, and that does help.
Live Hendrix..... If you can find it, there was a CD that came out about 1988 "Live at the BBC" or "Radio One Sessions" or something like that. It was a set of recordings that were live in the studio for BBC Radio-One broadcast. The sound quality is decent and the ...
Bill Evans Village Vanguard 3CD set Try sitting way off access. It'll sound less like points in space and more like a sounstage. Perhaps not the one that it was actually played on, but better than the left-channel right-channel nonsense that you get with so many of these early stere...
Which Jazz Albums are similar to Kind of Blue Miles Davis ESP. This pre-dates Kind of Blue by less than a year, the lineup is essentially the same. The music is a little more up-tempo, but there are some significant nods towards the modality of KOB to come. Also, IMHO the recording quality is...
Best Concert Film Grateful Dead Movie. Can't beat the toe-tapping 'Foothills'.
First song to "Blow You Away"... Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath. In eighth grade Ozzy Ozbourne's first two solo albums were a big deal (although they are really clownish in retrospect). I was a guy in our gang who discovered Sabbath and introduced with something like, "Yeah, Ozzy is...
Rudy Van Gelder: Genius or just lucky? Great responses folks. Khaki, I'm not suggesting that the music isn't great. To my mind it's the most amazing catalogue of 20th century recording there is. However, what's available sure doesn't sound like they put a lot of effort into making it s...
Compare Large Advent? Had a paif Advent Heritage from about 1991. Just put them away when I got the Spendor S8s. The Advents's had very mushy bass and compared to the Spendors, although I think they went lower. Also, switcing back to them after listening to a more mode...
Rotel RA 1062 integrated vs RB 1050 & RC 1070 seps The other advantage of the seperates is that if you're feeling bold down the road, the 1070 is bridgable to 300 watts mono, and apparently it's a five minute job that involves moving one clip inside the amp. At $600 a piece throwing another one on... |
