Vinyl vs high def audio i.e. 24bit / 96 or 192khz
I can offer another reason why people may be attracted to vinyl: its user-friendliness, i.e. it's fussy but I understand it.I have a high-performance digital front-end (pc-based music server-reclocker-dac, etc) and two TTs. When the server is down...
Importance of impedance matching cartridge with phono stage?
Hi. The quick response is that most people aren't even aware of this little detail (i.e.getting the loading correct) and live their lives complaining about the mediocre sound. The second point is that most cartridges play reasonably well @~100ohms ...
Buying three hunderds 2$ classical CD in one week.
I had totally missed the Living Stereo compilation—thanks for sharing! Now if only we could have the 24/192 files...

Display off- any benefit?
No discernible difference here either, when using my cdp (a Magnat tube) or my big cdp (Absolute, ideon audio) or both off. Then I discovered that the Absolute has a totally separate circuit for the display. The cdp, however, doesn’t... so no big ...
A DAC that can make digital sound analog?
@ brettmcee I have a serious suspicion that frequencies above 20kHz and below 20kHz are more detrimental than beneficial to audio reproduction. I beg to differ, esp above 20kHz; the sense of space, clarity, and "smoothness" are directly influenced...
question about Thiel CS 2
As far as I remember, the CS-2s I listened to aeons ago had bass; so it's either a matter of speaker placement or the amp can't drive them, probably the latter as the sound is tinny. (Is your amp powerful enough to drive them?)Anyway, I liked what...
Super Simple theory on speaker cables
I meant slew rate, of course
Super Simple theory on speaker cables
@Erik Interesting, thanks for sharing.I’ll have to check my cables characteristics! Empirically, I find that slightly capacitive ICs seem to perform slightly better — by which I mean a better sense of clarity & air, i.e. clearer stronger upper...
My sacrilegeous question to audiophiles out there regarding parametric equalizer.
@tubelvr1To get back to your original question, it seems unlikely that an external analogue equalizer will enhance detail—if anything, it might actually reduce it, which is what happened to me when I tried it years ago. This is because you are intr...
Full Range under $5k-ish
A plethora of recommendations, as usual! Let me add another: ATC SCM 40. Should be around 4k; if not, go for a recent pair of used 40 or 50 in your price range. Stunning dynamics, imaging, and detail (not harsh). Need power, but you already have t...
Full Range under $5k-ish
the time has finally come to upgrade my speakers What things don't you like anymore? There are so many choices out there, I think we need pointers, otherwise, any recommendation will be irrelevant. Two points: 1) matching the sound of yr bipoles w...
Quicksilver mono amp
I would opt for the 8417, keeping in mind, however, that the tubes are hard to find NOS anymore so, whenever you do find them listed, grab them! The mids & upper mids are exquisite.
Small drivers vs big drivers
@quanghuy147To make the situation more complicated, some speakers have small drivers but there are many of them. Can many small drivers compensate for the size limitationYes, they can, but it's a whole different design ball-game! Generally, smalle...
