System for a teenager
I second (third) the integrated idea. Assuming tubes will NOT trigger adolescent curiosity to "check out how these work"... (think of the heat & the voltages), Croft makes a reasonably priced integrated (Chameleon? $~1300 new) with MM phono I ...
Mozart Sym 41:reviews/opinions
Megasam, Gardiner on 41 is energetic, bright & bouncy. Under the maestro's baton, the musicians seem to sport a benevolent smile on their faces & bob their heads as they play. At times, you also get a good dance rhythm (try the opening bar...
How Do I Start Playing With the Big Boys and Girls
Cellorover's asks about yr musical tastes. This is important. If you listen to classical/jazz (i.e., lots of acoustic instruments) I can indicate certain products that match very well with the SF speaker line/sound.Please note that this is NOT exha...
Preamp Deal of the Century
A side note to Rayhall/Timchens exchanges: I have heard the CAT/Symphonic Line combo & it's nothing short of outstanding. Judging by the consensus on how the Syrah sounds in different systems, it could be similar in many ways to a CAT (but tha...
Review: Spendor S-100 Speaker
Timchen: is that 2xRG1 stereo in passive xover or active?
Can speakers be both "big" and "accurate" ?
I'm not sure what you mean by "big" sound, but I suspect you're targeting lower mid-range warmth and reasonably clear and "spacious sounding" upper end (usually upper-mids onward). For the latter, a lot depends on speaker placement: as you're firin...
Is 2 channel dead?
Isn't it fun that despite channel-controversy, the sounds (or music) we listen to, originate in glorious mono.I propose multichannel mono; may keep everyone happy:)
Mozart Sym 41:reviews/opinions
If you like Klemperer, you might also consider Sir Thomas Beecham/LPO. This has more of a dramatic hue (as befitted the times perhaps), but with a lot of sensitivity (cf: 2nd, last movement. Cheers
Mendelssohn String Quartets- best performance?
Try a recent recoding ('90s) of the Cherubini quartet on EMI (3cd). As to being the absolute best... I can't say!
Brahm's g- minor piano quartet
There's a historical version with Serkin & Busch on EMI (reference). You might like it.
Late Beethoven Piano Sonatas
Selectively taken, there are a few: Serkin, Gilels, Solomon (as Sugar above), Gulda... Another set of performers comprises Brendel, Gould & Richter. But as you like the Schnabel (I do too), I'm not sure what to recommend for a casual listen... ...
Excellent recording of Mozart Jupiter No.41 ?
Hi 6chac -- I've been battling with the sound of violins in my system... too glassy (or is it my imagination?) Cheers!
Any SS class A experience to share?
From personal experience of pairings with the Mini Utopia:* Spectral could be an option* YBA Passion (stereo)* Symphonic Line Kraft 250A (the best bass "slam")* Plinius (the newer model -- SA100?)HOWEVER, 1) do try auditioning; the Minis are nice ...
Excellent recording of Mozart Jupiter No.41 ?
Buxter -- agreed, wholeheartedly. (the CSO LP sounds better than the Vienna one though -- but who cares!)
Audiophile quality Mozart???
Kleiber on Decca/London would be my first choice too. The sound is not bad -- indeed, the voices on cd sound quite good even though the stageing is not top-notch vs the vinyl (in my system). Solti I find to be very strict to the rules and, though ...
