"New" Beatles Mono Catalog Release on 180gr Vinyl
The new Beatles mono set is, in a word, fabulous. I will say that I prefer a majority of the Beatles career output in stereo. But when the mono is superior, it is bone chilling. And it is not infrequent. The pressing quality is as good it gets. An...
Audio Research Reference 250 capacitor issue
The teflon caps in my Ref 40, Ref 150 and Ref Phono 2SE have not only had no problems, but to my ears are one of the main reasons that the sound of this generation of ARC gear is so much better than the last. I'm not giving mine up.
VAC amps and Focal Grand Utopias at $195k a pair
Come to think of it, I'd never heard VAC sound bad before. So, I would not attribute the sound I heard on Sunday to the VAC brand. But again, set-up, placement, room---who knows?
NY Audio Show September 26th to September 28th
My 9/28 post left out another great room---the Nola Metro Grand room. Sorry for the omission.
Audio Research Reference 250 capacitor issue
My understanding from digging was that the white caps were great but that there were problems with some of those caps early on in production. Not to worry, ARC tests the caps to make sure they are free from defects before install and the defective...
Audio Research Ref 150 or 250 with Maggie
Bifwynne is right. Ask Kal at ARC. ARC has Maggies (as well as Wilsons and Sonus Fabers) in house. He will not lie to you.
No Wilson Audio, D'Agastino, Lamm, YG at Ny show?
I missed them all, but still enjoyed the show.
Stylus cleaner
Dynavector recommends a stiff haired brush like the one Mapman pictured above.

Did not like the sound at all in the Focal room. Agree that size of room could have been the problem.
VPI new stuff...

MBL room, VPI with vintage Tannoys and new VPI integrated based on vintage Scott, Legacy/Ayon, Lampizator---all my favorite rooms in no particular order
The Plangent Process playback system? Huh?
Love Bruce and will bite as well-- but don't expect sonic masterpieces. I have first pressings of most of his albums and they consistently are among the worst sounding---exceptions being Tunnel of Love, Lucky Town, Human Touch, Wrecking Ball and H...
Your most disappointing purchase or audition?
I have yet to hear a Magico speaker (and I've had a few auditions of different models) that draws me in to the music. Always sounds clinical to me. That doesn't mean it's not great gear and that it would suit others' tastes as it surely does.
